Mobile Phone Covers Containing Radioactive Material Seized at Beirut Airport

Customs agents at the Rafik Hariri International Airport discovered on Thursday radioactive material in a shipment of mobile phone covers.

The Finance Ministry announced that a shipment of 98 crates of mobile phone covers, imported from China, were suspected of carrying radioactive material.

The Ministry ordered the Lebanese Atomic Energy Commission to conduct tests of samples taken from the crates.

The findings revealed high levels of radioactive material, including natural Thorium 232 and natural Radium 226.

The Finance Ministry has since ordered the airport customs agency to return the shipment to the sender.

The case has also been referred to the concerned authorities for proper legal measures to be taken.

On January 5, Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil revealed that toxic radioactive material was discovered in food products, narcotic pills, and industrial machines that were being smuggled at the airport and Beirut Port.
