Govt. Seeking to Withdraw Ghosn’s Statements on al-Qaida from Media Speculation

Lebanese government officials should exert more efforts to distance Lebanon from the twin Damascus bombings that took place in the Syrian capital on Friday, otherwise the cabinet would appear to be adopting a lax approach in combating terrorism, reported the Kuwaiti al-Rai newspaper on Monday.

Widely informed sources told the newspaper that President Michel Suleiman’s statements on Lebanon’s rejection of terrorism was the first attempt to ease the government “embarrassment” in this issue.

They interpreted the remarks as an attempt to withdraw Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn’s statements that al-Qaida members had infiltrated the Bekaa town of Arsal from media speculation.

Shortly after the Damascus bombings, Syria accused al-Qaida of being behind the attack.

The sources stressed the need for the government to adamantly deny any links to the attack in order to prevent the country from being dragged into the Syrian crisis.

They added that Ghosn should be held accountable for his statements and debriefed at cabinet in order for him to present the evidence of his claims that al-Qaida had indeed infiltrated Arsal.

The Syrian authorities should also be made to present any evidence they have on the alleged infiltration of extremists from Lebanon into its territories, they continued.

At least 40 people were killed and 166 wounded in two deadly bombings against Syrian security forces in Damascus on Friday.

Akkar and Tripoli are full of Al Qaïda terrorists . We know who helps them and finances them in Lebanon and elsewhere , and why they are here !

Send Ghosn to Homs, and let him tell the people of Homs, the bombings in Damascus, were caused by Al Qaeda.....leave in the middle of Downtown Homs...by himself....

This government can’t even protect us from Syrian border and air space violations., rockets firings or occasionally exploding arms depot.

reread yourself sweatin boy: "just from reading the morning titles here, can one see how the 'people' behind naharnet wish for a stable lebanon and are using every ounce of energy towards that end."

i guess then that you mean that the gvt should say that it sheltered al qaida in lebanon without doing anything but they knew it so that syria can come and bomb a lebanese village and drag lebanon into the syrian crisis...
and you claim to want a stable lebanon?

you are soooooooo funny

@sweating_demon: Maybe I will regret answering you, but somehow I feel compelled to comment on a few things: First, it would be nice if you don't resort to "personal" insults against your fellow citizens if they disagree with you. Second, I personally have an issue with how this alleged Qaeda presence was communicated publicly before even being discussed in the cabinet. For heavens sake, nobody wants or supports Qaeda here. Had the minister of defense in any country gotten hold of such info, he/she would have briefed his superiors and devised a plan to contain and eradicate these terrorists before they had a chance to escape. Instead, Ghosn made "political" statements that as you can see backfired on Lebanon and was used by the Syrian regime for its own end. I hope i have done enough exorcism on you and got the demons out of you. Thanks

Hizballah and Syria tells them to open their mouth and they put whatever they want in it. I am hoping for a day when our politicians dont hold allegiance to Syria Iran or any other country besides our own...

The government is correct. Ghosen's statement gives justification to a future Syrian attack in Lebanon against the people of Arsal and surrounding towns. They will say it was necessary to attack across the border at terrorists who were placing the Syrian people and territory at risk.

Mmm let's see, don't the Israelis do the same thing when it comes to South Lebanon and their cross border fly overs? Hezbollah is the first to protest the violation of national sovereignty when Hezbollah is the threat and the target of the incursion.
Now that Hezbollah is with Syria, not a peep from King Rat in his Hole about Syria violating Lebanese sovereignty with its fly overs and violations of Lebanese air space.
Some resistance!! It is all relative and situational. Hezbollah is not principled at all, but partisan. Its weapons are exposed as not being devine to protect Lebanon, but are militia weapons designed to protect Hezbollah. And Hezbollah does not equal Lebanon.
