Several people were injured at dawn Tuesday in a car bombing that targeted Hizbullah in its stronghold in the eastern district of Baalbek, the state-run National News Agency reported.

NNA said the vehicle was on the road between the towns of Sbouba and Wadi Abu Moussa that lead to Hrabta when a Hizbullah checkpoint opened fire on it.

The driver then detonated an estimated 50 kilograms of explosives, the agency said.

The blast, which occurred about two kilometers away from a Hizbullah center, caused multiple injuries, among them party members and civilians, NNA added.

But Hizbullah's al-Manar TV station denied there were casualties in the blast.

The army said in a terse communique that the explosion of a booby-trapped Grand Cherokee damaged several other vehicles.

It did not mention any casualties and did not reveal how the blast happened.

State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr tasked the military police and intelligence, and forensic experts with carrying out an investigation.

According to LBCI TV, the car was heading to the Hizbullah center to target it when it was stopped by the party's members at the checkpoint.

TV footage showed four destroyed vehicles.

NNA said the vehicle used for the bombing was a Kia Sportage stolen from Bourj Hammoud.

Hizbullah drew a tight security dragnet around the site of the blast as residents of the area said they heard the sound of sirens of ambulances heading towards the scene of the explosion.

NNA said that two suspicious vehicles have been previously stopped on the same road where the blast took place.

In recent months, several blasts have targeted Hizbullah strongholds and convoys in Beirut and the eastern Bekaa valley.

On November 19, two suicide attackers targeted the Iranian embassy in Beirut's southern suburbs, killing and injuring scores of people.

Most recently, on Dec. 4, gunmen assassinated a senior Hizbullah commander, Hassan al-Laqqis, in the garage of his building in Hadath.

The attacks are linked to the involvement of Tehran-backed Hizbullah in Syria's civil war.

Hizbullah has deployed thousands of its members to fight alongside troops loyal to President Bashar Assad against rebels seeking to topple him.

HA has invited these extremists with open arms into Lebanon. We have become a land of jihad on both sides: iranian jihad, and takfiri jihad. Thank you aoun and nasrallah.

Thumb benzona 17 December 2013, 07:47

Exactly.... Then they'll come whine again on TV and try justify the unjustifiable. They deserve the load of crepe that awaits them. Unfortunately, we're all suffering but no way in hell we'll stand by them. No way josé!

Thumb geha 17 December 2013, 08:04

now we will be tasked as spiteful and full of hate!
the fact remains that the actions of hizbushaitan have drawn extreme damage to Lebanon for several years to come.
we are expected to have over 2 million Syrian refugees plus over 1 million Palestinian refugees in 2014, and they all hate hizbushaitan and aoun.
what do you think they will be doing?

Thumb ice-man 17 December 2013, 12:20

Yes, possibly. Your saints wanted in the STL also have grandmothers? Possibly

Thumb Mystic 17 December 2013, 09:36

With or without interference in Syria. The Takfiris would've targeted Hezbollah no matter what. Good job by the people at the checkpoint stopping the car before it could do further damage. Cowards act as always by the takfiris.

Btw doesn't suprise me that Naharnet has been bought by Saudi just like the Daily Star, using same terms such as "The attacks are linked to the involvement of Tehran-backed e terms Hizbullah in Syria's civil war." Blablabla Naharnet keep up the good propaganda for KSA.

Thumb liberty 17 December 2013, 09:18

This no doubt comes as a direct result of HA sectarian war in Syria. CBS news had an analyst/expert on Islamic Fundamentalists on their late news program. He indicated that Al Qaida and other similar groups have not in the past been active in Lebanon and considered it as a "land of support". He further went on to say, following HA war in Syria, Al Qaida now considers Lebanon a legitimate Jihadist theater for its operations. This analyst spent time in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan among other places.

If we look back before HA entered Syria under false pretences, Lebanon enjoyed relative peace. We were spared these attacks and suicide bombers were almost unheard of in recent years.

The situation is definitely a grim one. Our reality check is that the war in Syria is going to be a long and drawn out war. The regime wins a few areas here, the rebels return the gesture with wins of their own in other areas. The war in Syria looks certain like it is a "controlled" war, one that is heading into a de facto stalemate leading into a controlled partition of the country. The region it seems is heading to the days before the Sykes Picot convention. But Hezbollah for reasons best known to it has refused to understand that involvement in Syria will bring about the disaster into Lebanon, and irrespective of which way the war in Syria will go, we Lebanese will keep paying the price of another Hezbollah mad adventure. As if 2006 was not a lesson enough for us.

Thumb -phoenix1 17 December 2013, 19:55

Tex, I understand your point of view, but I am now beginning to see this conflict in a bewildering way, even the experts seem to find it confusing, but then as you said, time will tell. Thanks though for a good post.

all kind of religious extremists , and the regime men ,...
all of them were enemies and brought havoc to Lebanon so hope the war in Syria lasts till the last religious extremist
may democracy and arab spring blossom in the gulf countries

grim situation in Syria: true. for those who lived through the demarcation lines of Lebanon, you might remember that no one was allowed to cross them either way.
will it result in partition? hard to say so far, except for the Kurdish part of Syria that will definitely be added to the Iraqi/Kurdish region in reparation of their separate country.
is it the best situation ever? sad to say: NO. the actions of hizbushaitan have done everything to drive the battle to Lebanon.
each week we have at least one or two suicides bombings.
did we have that?

Default-user-icon Tigger (Guest) 17 December 2013, 16:59

Same bunch of losers commenting on every post . Picking up words like 'takfiris' and coining it and thinking they know what they are talking about. Very disrespectful to each other and they wonder why we the Lebanese are in a constant struggle for our identity and survival. Ashamed with any of you that are posting and say they are a Lebanese. I have yet to see a discussion other than being abusive to each ,worth picking on. Quit the sectarian mentality and start thinking of your country if you truly are Lebanese otherwise take your crap somewhere else.

Oh how happy I am !

Hezbollah gets what they deserve !!! I'm not happy about Dahyé / Jnah bombings where innocent people died because Hezbollah attracts terrorists like a magnet ! How do you say : "opposites attract" ... shiite terrorists attract sunni terrorists !

Hezbollah set up yet another ILLEGAL checkpoint and got burned for it.

If Hezbollah wants protection, they should call the Lebanese army and not take matter into their own hands.

Until then, may they all die a brutal death ...

There is only one way for Hezbollah to stop this... PULL OUT OF SYRIA and DISARM or join the Lebanese Army ranks and command !
