Mufti Accuses Protesters at Funeral of Seeking to 'Kill' him

Grand Mufri Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Qabbani considered on Monday that protesters at al-Khasheqji Mosque were seeking to “Kill him” upon his arrival to take part in the funeral of 16-year-old boy Mohammed al-Chaar.

“After I heard slogans saying Qabbani the enemy of God I thought that my blood was wasted,” Qabbani said in comments published in al-Akhbar newspaper.

The mufti explained that he decided to take part in the funeral after “he saw footage of the Chaar's father and his friends crying.”

“My bodyguards weren't there... I only wanted to pray and go back home,” Qabbani said.

Qabbani struggled on Sunday to leave the premises of the Mosque after mourners were angered by his arrival to attend the funeral of Chaar, prompting members of the Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau's Strike Force to escort him out.

Several youth, mainly supports of al-Mustaqbal movement, were outraged by the arrival of the Mufti, shouting angry slogans against him.

Qabbani's ties with al-Mustaqbal deteriorated last year when he met with a delegation from Hizbullah the same day the Special Tribunal for Lebanon indicted four party members in former PM Rafik Hariri's February 2005 assassination.

Relations between the two sides were also shaken when the mufti met with Syrian Ambassador Ali Abdul Karim Ali, whom al-Mustaqbal and the March 14 opposition alliance have on several occasions said should be expelled.

Chaar's funeral was attended by several Beirut figures, officials, popular delegations and the slain teenager's family and friends.

He succumbed to his injuries. A picture of him and three friends taken moments before downtown Beirut explosion has gone viral on social networking websites.

The bomb attack took place on Friday morning in Starco in Beirut, leaving ex-Finance Minister and ex-Prime Minister Saad Hariri's adviser Mohammed Shatah, his bodyguard and seven other people dead.

when this guy and his son decided to steal the money of the sunni wakf, he signed his ticket to prison.
however, while all the sunni community wants him out, and all the living PMs asked him to resign, he seeked the backing of the Syrian regime and hizbushaitan to stay in his post.

yes he is supported by hizbushaitan, the same ones who bombed this 16 year old young man.

what is expected from the people when such a thief decides to show his ugly face at this funeral?

It is ironic that in Lebanon, when people do not want a leader anymore, it becomes next to impossible to remove him through regular channels. Sheikh Qabbani should have understood the message a long time ago, that he was no longer welcomed, thus had overstayed his welcome, and should have done the one good thing, leave the post to someone who was more commensurate with the aspiration of the people. yesterday was certainly not an attempt to kill him, it was simply the drop that made the glass overflow. Parallel-wise, what happened yesterday should serve as a stark reminder to many Lebanese leaders of what people are capable of doing, if you push them to their limits. When people rise, nothing stand on their way, surely the Sheikh who supposedly must be wise and who must have preached a million time must have felt the fear of a people when they are fed up.

I don't know about Saniora, but Hariri are you kidding? Of course he is a looter. One of the reasons I do not support the M14 alliance with him. He may be against Syrian occupation in Lebanon, but not someone I want to be allies with.

Missing greatpierro 30 December 2013, 08:53

as a matter of fact no one has killed him. He is just seeking to dramatize the matter and victimize himself. What a dishonest man. Without the backing of the syrian and hizbullah he would have resigned a long time ago.

Bad analogy FT

FT you remind me of a cancer that spreads through the body with your poisonous BS comments. I have never read anything more ridiculous than what you are implying, you are saying that M14 assassinated their own???
Maybe your M8 sheep can swallow this but no Lebanese with an ounce of free thinking can swallow this. Its a shame to see people like you walking around with Lebanese citizenship when your loyalty is to other countries. You make me sick.

Thumb cedars2 30 December 2013, 12:00

Thumb smarty 30 December 2013, 11:39

what a puss this sheikh is. he shouldn't fear meeting with God if he was an honest man. teen kids wanted to stone im yesterday, lol, i wish i could have seen it. Why did Miqati address him like he would be with a cardinal? A Mufti is no "eminence".

Missing formerlebaniz 30 December 2013, 11:57

I really hate to say it, I hate to sound defeated, but we are. What is the purpose of this struggle? What's the purpose of all these people being killed?

Why are we still arguing and fighting them? Let them have it let them have it all let them rule the country let them have it all, let's move all the march14 political leaders out of the country to avoid more death and murders.

It's no longer worth it, it really isn't, when March 14 leaders are standing for their rights they are risking innocent peoples lives, this is not an environment for political debate when you are being killed with other bystanders for your opinion.

I wouldn't want to risk my families life for my opinion even anymore it's not worth it, there is no longer a chance to fight this, I'm sorry guys but give it up, it's over, let them have this country, let them be accountable to the world with this country, peace.

Thumb geha 30 December 2013, 12:06

this is exactly what the Iranians want.

but .... we are Lebanese. and it will not work.

Missing formerlebaniz 30 December 2013, 12:28

It's not worth it anymore no one is saying you are not allowed your opinion, but no one is killing you for it.

For me my opinion is not worth one shaar, not worth a dove dying.

Take this country man, really take it. When you are ready to have an opposition and have developed the country enough to protect a simple right as freedom of speech and allow an opposition to be free without a risk of being killed let us know we might come back to our country, that no matter where we are we still love.

I simply want to spare this country more bloodshed I want to spare the life of the youth and children.

Thumb geha 30 December 2013, 12:03

if you were Lebanese you would not be cheering for the Iranians who are bombing the Lebanese people.

I am neutral. I do not support neither M8 nor M14 as I view them both politically corrupt, worthless and crooks
My dream is to see the emergence of a 3rd viable alternative An alternative to being either pro or anti Syrian. I want to see a Lebanese alternative

Thumb cedre 30 December 2013, 13:07

The mufti was not supposed to come, he had sent a delegate.
Then SOMEBODY advised him to go, and $hit hit the fan.

1- A mufti shouldn't be m8/m14 a la carte. He should mind the religion, the quran and sunna, educate and preach. Forming a government is none of his business...

2- The funerals and mourning families should have been respected.
They can insult/assault/kill him any other day.

Thumb cedre 30 December 2013, 13:57

ignoramus, this guy is not even a mufti, same for those in arsal, etc... There should be one mufti and not politicized.
But I speak to somebody's that knows jack about Islam.

Missing cedaris 30 December 2013, 13:10

Flamethrower, i can't but wonder how you can claim to be "hardcore" FPM and yet genuinely be seeking an alternative to the mainstream M14 and M8. The two are surely mutually exclusive states of being.
I am tempted to ask you to "practice what you preach" but i have to say many items in your preachings alarm me.
Most alarming of all is your systematic portrayal of anyone who has a differing (i am deliberately not using the word opposing) point of view as being a Takfiri, or a Takfiri apologist, and a pawn in the Wahhabi game, etc.
This "us and them" and "you are with us or against us" mindset is the kind of rudimentary propaganda and thought process that was most famously championed by the likes of Bush, Cheney etc. as they tried to surreptitiously trick the masses into a war that had no legal or moral basis. Your rhetoric unfortunately places you in the same bracket as these types...

Missing cedaris 30 December 2013, 13:52

I was merely objectively remarking that your claim below had some conflicting statements. "Far from neutral" and "hardcore" are just not compatible with seeking a third way. You are "engagé" in the french sense. Not a bad thing per se. you just didn't sell me on your genuine desire for third way that's all. Full quote below so you don't think i am "quote-shopping"
"i'm far from neutral habboub, i'm hardcore FPM but i welcome any TRUE neutral, anyone who is not faking it because i'm sick of polarizing politics and i truly want a 3rd alternative to M14 and M8"
