Hariri to Give Decisive Answer on Cabinet Proposal as March 14 Sets Several Conditions

إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربية W460

The March 8 alliance was waiting for the final go ahead of al-Mustaqbal movement leader ex-PM Saad Hariri on a cabinet proposal as the party sought answers on several questions, including the policy statement.

An Nahar daily quoted informed sources as saying on Thursday that the Hizbullah-led March 8 camp, which has accepted an 8-8-8 government formula, was waiting for Hariri's answer, whose movement is a member of the March 14 alliance.

Al-Mustaqbal MP Nuhad al-Mashnouq has said that the coalition's approval of the cabinet proposal lied on receiving clear answers to several questions.

Their questions lie on the shape of the government, the policy statement, rotation of all ministerial portfolios, and the right of President Michel Suleiman and Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam for veto to reject any name proposed.

But March 8 officials threw the ball in the court of Suleiman and Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat, who has played a huge mediating role.

The officials, who were not identified, told An Nahar that March 8 has given its rivals a chance to reach an agreement on the new cabinet by giving the two camps eight minsters each and centrists – Suleiman, Salam and Jumblat- another eight.

They warned that the March 8 alliance would either seek to grant greater powers to the resigned cabinet of caretaker PM Najib Miqati or call for new binding consultations by the president with parliamentary blocs to name a new premier-designate if Jumblat was unsuccessful.

But al-Joumhouria newspaper quoted sources as saying that the five conditions set by March 14 are non-negotiable and that March 8 should either accept them or Suleiman and Salam would resort to their option of forming a nonpartisan cabinet.

One of the major conditions is the adoption of the Baabda Declaration in the policy statement and giving up the army-people-resistance equation.

Such a condition is likely not to be approved by March 8.

As I said no government!!!!
our leaders do not know what compromise means for the sake of the nation

Thumb mckinl 09 January 2014, 09:58

@ coolmec

There is an agreement on the table ... It is now up to Hariri to decide between Lebanon and the KSA jihad on Hezbollah and the Shia in general.

Missing coolmec 09 January 2014, 10:29

I hope the agreement will go through. the country needs a government, one that can tackle the tremendous challenges facing Lebanon. I just hope these politicians we have will unite for Lebanon's sake

KSA jihad to abide by the declaration that we don't have factions occupying another country... Nice try FlameThrower. Gotta love his Irish alias.

Wow..... are you sure you are here? If you are then hear this:
No need to shout, we can hear your anger loud and clear. Just give us your schedule of when you will be here ... so we don't sneek on you with our replies. Ok
As for the substance .. Jumblat.. assasinated because he said stop to your masters now... PLO WHO CARES... they are long gone ... and not in the picture anymore.
So beside the BS what do you have?

Thumb freedomarch 09 January 2014, 16:22

Nope Hariri is not my friend. As a matter of fact none of the Lebanese politicians is my friend, no need....

Thumb lebanon_first 09 January 2014, 08:42

This is the test for Hariri. What is more important for him. Revenge? Or Lebanon?
If he accepts to compromise, he will be thinking of the millions of Lebanese who have families and businesses in Lebanon.
If he doesn't accept, be will be putting Lebanon in the line of fire of regional conflicts.
I would understand his non compromising. But he has to think of the Lebanese.

Missing peace 09 January 2014, 11:48

"If he doesn't accept, be will be putting Lebanon in the line of fire of regional conflicts. "

what about hezbollah? they already put lebanon into the syrian conflict by not obeying the baabda declaration... it is not hariri fighting in syria...

Thumb lebanon_first 09 January 2014, 17:10

Peace. HA already put Lebanon in the line of fire of regional conflicts. times and times again. But we are not discussing HA. I expect more patriotism from Saad.

Missing peace 09 January 2014, 18:05

the ONLY solution to get lebanon out of this mess is to appoint technocrats and experts that are not affiliated with a party! otherwise any side will again block the other as usual....so we ll return to square one...
but of course M8ers cannot accept this, they need their gang in power...

Thumb ice-man 09 January 2014, 08:56

Hariri and Geagea must withdraw their forces from Qusayr, Aleppo, and all other Syrian territories otherwise they will be putting Lebanon in the line of fire of regional conflicts.

I wonder what happened to the 9-9-6 arrangement that Hassan Nasrallah said "Accept now better for you". Hizb of terror must act as a civil political party before it is included in any government lineup.

Thumb -phoenix1 09 January 2014, 13:52

There should be no so-called government of National Unity, we should at cost avoid falling into this trap. Such a government is here only to serve the interest of a few M8 parties, procrastination will return with a vengeance if this was to happen. The only government from now on will be one in where Mr. Salam forms his reduced cabinet comprised entirely of technocrats and not affiliated to anyone M, be it 8 or 14. Let Hariri be clear on this. The issue is now well past the interest of a few M8 leaning parties, we are now talking a an entire nation about to sink permanently.

Thumb zakblat 09 January 2014, 15:18

Thumb beiruti 09 January 2014, 15:38

It is all quite Orwellian. The M8 have threatened to go to the street and blow up the country if Sleiman and Salaam were to propose a "fait accompli" government. However, the 8-8-8 formula proposed by M8 is exactly that, a fait accompli government. Even if it were proposed and adopted, even numbers means that it is prone to being locked in 50-50 ties on any decision. In any event, it is actually the 996 formula by a different name since M14 and M8 each get a "decisive" member of the "neutral" 8. It is a formula to formalize Hezbollah's control of the State and its institutions, a fait accompli.

Thumb freedomarch 09 January 2014, 16:12

To Sephon:
How can you say that after few days of assassinating his aid? Unless your masters still have their agenda and the government is not strong yet he will lead from outside.

Thumb FlameCatcher 09 January 2014, 16:26

@Southern : I thought you were against sectarianism ? Oh I'm wrong ... that's what you say when in fact you are a racist just like those sunni extremists...

Your politicians, just like M14 are incapable of governing our country. Grow out of it. You don't give the keys to our country to street kids who grew up to become mafias and terrorist leaders.

Thumb FlameCatcher 09 January 2014, 17:30

Then accept a non-sectarian government made up of technocrats. This means, professionals in their respective fields who are capable of tackling issues such as electricity, education, tourism, economy and such. Issues our politicians are incapable of even addressing.

You want change ? It starts by rendering our political parties useless and irrelevant. It's starts by calling the the emergence of a new political class. Not by defending our current set of corrupt politicians who are all either mafias or warlords or terrorists.

And please look at today's youth who does not care neither for Hezbollah nor for Mustaqbal, Geagea or Aoun.

All these people behind the #NotAMartyr campaign, the SILENT MAJORITY are telling all of the politicians to F Off ! and so am I. And so should you.

Hezbollah cannot bring anything good to the country. It's time you realise this.

Thumb FlameCatcher 09 January 2014, 21:54

@Southern : and how do you go about that ? How do you abolish sectarian behavior ? it starts by abolishing differences. It starts by abolishing the weapons ! It starts with Hezbollah's weapons who are the main factor of differentiation and fear to their opponents. By banning the use of GOD in the name of your party. By removing a "Sheikh" from the head of your party.

Hezbollah is the main obstacle to a peaceful lebanon. There is no doubt about that. And no Zionist or Takfiri threat can excuse your behavior AND SECTARIANISM

Missing coolmec 09 January 2014, 16:43

Cedre
All I can say is that I hope they will reach a fair and satisfactory compromise for everybody's sake. The country is in bad shape, the Lebanese people (silent majority) from all sects are suffering silently. We are very close to disintegration of the Lebanese fabric. As such I do hope they will reach consensus

Thumb -phoenix1 09 January 2014, 17:04

Southern, though I respect your views, but I also find it hard to agree with them too. First, I believe it will be fair not to put into question Hariri's patriotism, but please my brother, let's be honest, how on earth can he return when his MP's and aides are being decimated one after the other? OK, and what about the Lebanese state, as recent as the beginning of the year when Al Shatat was killed, till now there are NO clues as to whom killed him, well, officially that is. Has it not yet occurred to you that this same treatment is given whenever an M14 figure gets killed? With all my respects to Sayed Hassan, is he not too in hiding, deep underground and never sleeping in the same bed twice? Then I don't know how you jumped from Greece to Italy all linked to sectarian dynamics there. Technocrats work, and the first cabinet that took over Omar Karame's administration in 2005 did a sterling job in such a time.

Thumb -phoenix1 09 January 2014, 17:08

The truth ya Southern and please, let's call apples by their real names, Hezbollah is simply claustrophobic when anyone talks of a government which it cannot control or subjugate, and why? because Hezbollah feels that with all those strange things it is doing and keeps doing, it crucially needs rubber stamp people to oil its wishes unquestioningly. This is why HA illegally derailed two Hariri legit administrations and forced it into a forced marriage. Please Southern, let's be honest please, Hezbollah keeps using muscle till now, but there will come a time when muscle will mean nothing, do check on the Al Assad regime now, if it had to recalculate 3 years back, what it would do.
