U.S. Extends Asset Freeze on Persons 'Threatening Lebanon Stability'‎

U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday extended a freeze of assets on persons “threatening stability in Lebanon.”

A White House statement, extending the freeze imposed in 2007, said that "certain ongoing activities, such as continuing arms transfers to Hizbullah that include increasingly sophisticated weapons systems, serve to undermine Lebanese sovereignty."

The move comes amid tense relations between the United States and Hizbullah’s key regional ally Syria.

On January 12 Hizbullah and its allies toppled Saad Hariri’s government by resigning from the cabinet over a U.N. probe by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon into the assassination of former premier Rafik Hariri, Saad’s father.

Former President George Bush had frozen the assets of two pro-Syria Lebanese politicians in 2007. They are Assaad Hardan from the Syrian Social National Party and former Minister Wiam Wahhab.

The sanctions also targeted Syrian officials Hafez Makhlouf and Mohammed Nassif.

This makes no sense. Why would anyone involved in these transfer hold assets in the U.S. or within their reach?

In any case, if Obama wants to freeze assets of those who are "threatening stability in Lebanon" then he should start by freezing the U.S.'s own assets and those of Israel. Oh! may be that's what the had in mind... that would make more sense!

Le Phenician,

Yet your overlords are begging for a bone from the US. Don't forget that most of the world is dependant on the US currency, US companies, US stockmarket, US .. heck US everything.

The US army is still by miles the strongest army in the world. Also, if the US is as you are trying to convince your self bankcrupt the entire world economy will get into a coma (don't forget what happenned to the world when the realestate market collapsed in the US). This whole deficit limit raise is a ritual dance our politicians like to mess with it's called Democracy. But please don't forget in the past 50 years this self-set debt ceiling was raised 102 times.

If the US decides to freeze the assets for some mischeifs they have the right to do so, if they want to wipe their @$$ with your drug money. They have EVERY right to do so, quite frankly if they decide to put your liken in Guantenmo I'm %100 behind them. They would STILL remain the most fair superpower that ruled earth.
