Gunmen shot dead one policeman and wounded another on Tuesday in Yemen's main southern city of Aden, a police official told Agence France Presse.

"Unidentified gunmen opened fire on two policemen who were coming back from work, and then fled," the official said.

Meanwhile, one protester was wounded in al-Mukalla, capital of the southeast Hadramawt province, when police fired on protesters demonstrating late on Monday in support of the secessionist Southern Movement, witnesses said.

The Southern Movement wants independence for south Yemen, which was a sovereign state prior to unification with the north in 1990.

South and east Yemen have seen deadly attacks amid the political crisis that has rocked the country for the past six months, with mass street protests demanding the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
