Report: March 8 Divided on Aoun's Presidential Choices

The March 8 alliance is divided on the candidacy of Free Patriotic Movement chief Michel Aoun for the presidency, the Kuwaiti al-Anba daily reported on Friday.

The newspaper quoted sources as saying that some March 8 members, including Hizbullah, are hoping Aoun would decide to give up his bid for the presidency.

They said others want to give him more chances to try out his luck in the coming few weeks.

Aoun hasn't officially announced his candidacy. But the lawmakers of his Change and Reform bloc and the rest of the March 8 MPs cast blank ballots in the first round of the election.

They later pulled out of the session, resulting in lack of quorum.

March 8 lawmakers, except for Speaker Nabih Berri's bloc, also boycotted the second round of elections on Wednesday.

Their move is aimed at sending a strong message of protest to the candidacy of Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea, who is backed by their foes in the March 14 alliance.

Aoun is currently negotiating with al-Mustaqbal movement leader ex-PM Saad Hariri to be approved as a consensual candidate. He and his supporters claim that only a president, who has garnered the support of all parties, would be able to rule.

Al-Anba's sources expressed fears that there would a vacuum in the country's top Christian post if the parliament failed to elect a new head of state by May 25 to succeed President Michel Suleiman.

Thumb ibinherathreik 02 May 2014, 10:00

Thumb ibinherathreik 02 May 2014, 10:01

If M8 can't even agree on Aoun (what I've been saying for a year now), how do they expect M14 to accept him ?

Hezbollah does not want Aoun for president. This is clear as day ! This is why Aoun did not announce his candidacy because he would risk appearing like a stooge with close to no votes in parliament vs Geagea.

Thumb FlameCatcher 02 May 2014, 13:32

M14 is backing a warlord. And M8, the coalition of Warlords is backing Aoun, another warlord. Whether you like it or not, Aoun is a warlord, part of Lebanon's dark past. So your double standards need to stop.

Focus on supporting another candidate because both Geagea or Aoun are unacceptable.

And M14's support for Geagea is just a bid to negotiate for a real alternative candidate. They know Geagea won't get elected. This is not their purpose.

I don't cling on Geagea. In fact, I hate him and despise his followers. But I respect his efforts and positions since he got out of jail.

Aoun however has lost all my respect since he came back to Lebanon. i was the first to support him and he lost it !

Thumb FlameCatcher 02 May 2014, 15:15

@FT : your pathetic attempt to make me appear as an ouwwet supporter shows you are bankrupt of arguments.

In times of war, LAF commander doesn't mean anything. There was no LAF and as LAF commander, Aoun has ordered the bombing of civilians and christians.

You cannot try and excuse Aoun for his past while blaming Geagea for his crimes. Both are the same ... tainted with war crimes and atrocities !

Thumb FlameCatcher 02 May 2014, 18:18

@FT : you should stop jerking of to the illusion that I support the ouwet. Aounies have no comment to make about integrity. Freedom fighters turned dictator apologists should simply shut up.

You are the worst kind of Lebanese, irrelevant, brainwashed sheep who have nothing going for themselves. No ideas, no ideals, just a shepherd loving blind idiot who is driving a car at 200mph and fails to see the brick wall in front of you.

Yalla, hang on to Aoun all you can and hang on well because you're in for a bumpy ride to irrelevance !

Thumb FlameCatcher 02 May 2014, 23:45

I agree with you M11er. Except FT lives in a bipolar world where people can only take 1 of 2 sides. He doesn't accept people criticizing Hezbollah and Aoun and not being M14. As I said, Geagea and Aoun and go to hell and take FT with them to fight there for eternity !

Thumb -phoenix1 02 May 2014, 12:34

God help us if Aoun is elected president, he will sell what is left of our country. If M8 considers Geagea as the wrong candidate, what improvement would Aoun be over Geagea? These two men are already polarized well beyond hope, thus their role under the presidency will polarize Lebanese society ever more, as if we needed such during these trying times. Maybe now it is our best bet to have Qahwaji take over, as none of the M rivals can table a viable candidate.

Thumb FlameCatcher 02 May 2014, 12:53

@FT : If Aoun had Hezbollah's votes, he would have presented his candidacy long ago. But he doesn't. Hezbollah told him to get Hariri's votes and then just maybe they would give him their votes. But they are praying he doesn't get Hariri's support because even you closest partners hate him !

Thank you me dear Bani Maarouf, disguised as Wolf Rear. I am talking about the thread matter, and you? You're till stuck somewhere in Limbo. Move on ya man, engaged first gear, at least.

M11er, if ever I am limited, it's because of the lowering quality of this forum, lest I say more. Thanks for the nudge.

Thumb beiruti 02 May 2014, 15:13

Yes, yes, of course. Hezbollah does not want to empower Aoun. Never. They allied with him so as to deny M14 an even larger parliamentary bloc in 2005. Hezbollah's objective is not to unify the Christians behind Aoun but to empower Aoun enough with Shia votes so as to keep the Christian parties divided and weakened because out of the weakness of the Christian parties, the strength of the Shia Party is enhanced a bit.
It is very short sighted.

Thumb beiruti 02 May 2014, 15:16

A weakened Christian political presence means a weakened Lebanese state. And a weak Lebanese state leaves the Shia, though their power is enhanced in the short run, they, along with all of the other confessional groups of the country exposed to the instability raging in the region caused by a weakened Lebanese state.
The best course for the Shia, Sunni, Christian and Druze of Lebanon is to let that old man Aoun retire, pass from the stage so that new blood can come to the Presidency, unify the Christian parties, bring all confessional groups together and thus revive the credibility of the state and its institutions.

Thumb geha 02 May 2014, 16:30

no, aoun knows exactly what is his role, and he is executing it to perfection, and is being well paid in return.

even worse!

Aoun should become Pope. Lebanese Politics is small time.
