'Undeclared Alliance' Blocks Agreement on 'Costly' Electricity Plan

A ministerial meeting held Monday failed to reach a final agreement on an electricity plan suggested by Energy and Water Minister Jebran Bassil, under which $1.2 billion would be earmarked to buy 700 Megawatts of electricity.

“The four-phase plan, which will cost the state $5 billion, should be flawless legally and administratively in order to gain approval,” ministerial sources told LBC television.

MTV, meanwhile, quoted ministerial sources as saying that “it is unlikely the electricity plan will be approved during tomorrow’s (Tuesday’s) cabinet session in Beiteddine because of the undeclared alliance between the ministers of (Premier Najib) Miqati, (President Michel) Suleiman, (MP Walid) Jumblat and (Speaker Nabih) Berri, who are seeking to guarantee that the plan be adopted according to rules and regulations.”

Briefing reporters after the ministerial meeting, acting information minister Wael Abu Faour said “discussions during the meeting were technical, scientific and free of any political considerations or calculations.”

Discussions “focused on a number of issues, choices and resources that will be included in the electricity plan,” Abu Faour added.

“The most important point was the one mentioned by the energy minister and I personally believe that it includes answers to several questions that will be raised later,” Abu Faour noted, quoting Bassil as saying that “the cabinet’s role will be decisive in any future plan and there is full commitment to the applicable laws in this regard.”

The new majority has shown that it cares for the welfare of this country, unlike the corrupt March 14 baboons! ONE WAY TICKET!

Probably because Berri didn't get his commission.

Was there any discussion that all Lebanese should pay their electric bills?

Look at what they are doing ? Making the lebanese people from poor to poorer. That's what you want ? You want to follow the ZAIM or ZOUAMA ? This is our history and our country is build on AL ZAAME. Go away all of you ya ZOAMA, we can manage to select new leaders, Fini pour les Aoun, Jumblat, Berri, Gemayel, Chamoun,Geagea. No body cares about us, so i think we have to revolt and change this political class. REVOLUTION, REVOLUTION, REVOLTION.

Long live the lebanese identity ( ONE GOD ONE LAND)

They will reach consensus when they are all guaranteed a share of the pie. That's why they haven't reached an agreement..not out of their ethical or moral behavior. This whole government came courtesy of "black shirts", so what do you expect from them?? Black shirts are analogous of corruptio in Lebanon!! they assassinate, steal, confiscate, violate, intimidate.....and now they come wearing european suits and smile to cameras and they want us to be believe they are civil humans....No way!!!

Who will leave the alliance first? Aoun or Jumblatt.

If part of the package did not include Shia paying for electricity then it is good it didn't pass or it would just be more debt added to the debt already there. Until they pay they will continue bankrupting the country.

Don't they have any pride in paying their own way instead of holding out their hands like beggars?

M8 are funny people, they say Hariri stole 40 billion while the syrians , Berri, Lahoud, and after recovery from civil war and reconstruction of both the airport and downtown, and here we are 2006 , war against '' zionists '' = 11billion $ in one month, + billions $ of losses due to the KHIYAM or tents for a year in centreville, then after the illegal constructions on people and state property and now 5 billion $ that wants to be used without any details of spending, if my calculations are correct that makes about 20 billion in less than 5 years, of emptyness and nothing in return, who are the crooks now? bunch of blinded sheeps, we all admit that march 14th has made mistakes , but as you can see M8 is committing worse..
