The television showed large crowds in major cities, carrying banners of "Death to Israel" and "Death to America."
Many demonstrators also brandished portraits of the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the founder of the Islamic revolution, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who attended the rally in Tehran, was to give a speech before the Friday prayers at Tehran University.
The "Quds Day" rally is held every year on the last Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in solidarity with the Palestinians.
