The U.N. Security Council on Sunday condemned the "heinous and cowardly murder" of British aid worker David Haines by an Islamic State militant.

"This crime is a tragic reminder of the increasing dangers humanitarian personnel face every day in Syria," the council emphasized in a statement, adopted unanimously by its 15 members.

The statement called for aid workers to be respected in conflict zones and "stressed again that ISIL must be defeated and that the intolerance, violence and hatred it espouses must be stamped out."

Using an alternate acronym for the group, the council members emphasized that "such continued acts of barbarism perpetrated by ISIL do not intimidate them but rather stiffen their resolve that there has to be a common effort" against it and other jihadist groups.

The council also called for the "immediate, safe and unconditional release of all those who are kept hostage" by IS and other groups associated with al-Qaida.

It urged all states "to cooperate actively" with Britain's efforts to bring the perpetrators of Haines' execution to justice.

Haines was kidnapped in Syria in March 2013.

His beheading was revealed in a video released late Saturday by militants from IS, an extremist group that has taken over a vast territory in Iraq and Syria in recent months.

Habib Bourgaiba unfortunately was absolutely correct decades ago when he stated that the only solution to such dogmatic theocratic doctrinaires is utter annihilation. They may have been born human but they morphed into something that is totally alien to humanity. They MUST be eradicated, period.

I am not a believer in the recent executions of the americans and now the british aid worker. they looked stage as attempt to motivate public opinion in the west for another round of bombing in Iraq and soon Syria and God knows where else they have planned. Isis is a creation of the west, it is silly to think that they are the intended target.

by the way, where was the security council when Israel was killing at random innocent Palestinians in Gaza.

In the same place it was when Hamas were shooting thousands of rockets into Israel hoping to hit as many civilian targets as possible. Israel was fortunate that it had shelters for most of its civilian population, something that Hamas had stopped the Gaza civilian population from having.

the question is where was also the Security council when HA and the Shia militias of Malki were committing massacres in Iraq and Syria.
