March 14: Suleiman, Miqati Must Fulfill Pledges, Commit to Resolutions on Lebanon.
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةThe March 14 General Secretariat criticized on Wednesday the government’s stalling practices, saying that they will only lead Lebanon to further crises that are being run by regional powers “that are not part of international legitimacy.”
It said in a statement after its weekly meeting: “Seeing as Lebanon is heading the United Nations Security Council, President Michel Suleiman and Prime Minister Najib Miqati should fulfill their pledges and completely commit to resolutions on Lebanon.”
It urged the government to cease stalling in implementing Security Council resolution 1701, especially in ending the illegitimate possession of arms.
It should also curb weapons smuggling into Lebanon and stop being selective in dealing with Special Tribunal for Lebanon decisions, said the General Secretariat.
“Maintaining the policy of procrastination will harm Lebanon’s credibility and that of its constitutional institutions,” it noted.
“Its image before the international community will also be harmed and the country will only be dragged deeper into regional crises,” stressed the statement.
On local developments, it emphasized the need to adhere to the constitution and Taif Accord in order to resolve various disputes and protect the Lebanese.
“The constitution and Taif Accord are the sole authorities in ending political, security, military, economic, cultural, social, and developmental affairs,” it said.
Addressing regional developments, the March 14 General Secretariat urged the Lebanese state to exert all possible efforts to ensure the establishment of a Palestinian state.
It also renewed its call on various Arab institutions to aid the Syrian people in their plight against the Syrian regime.
Reminder for those with a short term memory :
"United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 is a resolution that was intended to resolve the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict.
It was unanimously approved by the United Nations Security Council on 11 August 2006. The Lebanese cabinet, which includes two members of Hezbollah, unanimously approved the resolution on 12 August 2006."
Amongst other points, the resolution calls for:
-Disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon (implying Hezbollah)
-No armed forces other than UNIFIL and Lebanese (implying Hezbollah and Israeli forces) will be south of the Litani River
