Health Minister Wael Abou Faour ordered on Thursday the closure of drinking water filling companies that are violating food and water safety standards.

Abou Faour said in a memo that he asked security agencies to close all unlicensed shops that fill drinking water as part of the campaign he is waging against violators.

He told LBCI on Tuesday that Aqua Pure, Quality Water and Aqua Giant were among the companies that did not meet the health standards specified by the ministry.

He said drinking water sold by some of the unlicensed companies contained traces of sewage. Their numbers reach around 800.

He added that the state-supplied water was also polluted because of the old water network.

But the state-run Beirut and Mount Lebanon water company issued a statement on Thursday, stressing that there was no bacteria nor chemical agents in the water in the distribution area.

It said the firm carries out monthly tests at its laboratories from around 1,000 samples.

On Wednesday, Abou Faour rejected renovations at Beirut's ill-famed slaughterhouse and revealed the names of more institutions, including supermarkets and restaurants, violating food safety measures.

The minister ordered shut the slaughterhouse, which is based in Karantina, for violating health and hygiene requirements.

He took similar measures against the slaughterhouses of Aqbiyeh, Bisariyeh and Ghazieh based in south Lebanon.

The prosecutor's office has already launched court proceedings against dozens of food violators.

Nabka... Agreed. Good luck with that wish. Nevertheless, any attempt to clean up Lebanon is always welcome and appreciated. Got to start somewhere I guess. Keep up the good work minister Abou Faour... At least he is trying to do his job by serving the people!

Good work honorable minister. We the people know that you are going through a lot these days, because of your dedication, your conscience and your selfless efforts to serve and protect the people. For once and in a rare show of dedication by our state, here comes a good minister. keep it up Sir, the people are by the side of any state official or institution that is doing its work in the way you are. But please, do not relent, life is already a lot safer for the Lebanese consumer.
