Army Targets Militant Posts on Outskirts of Arsal

The Lebanese army targeted on Saturday posts for militants on the outskirts of the northeastern border town of Arsal with heavy artillery, the state-run National News Agency reported.
NNA, said that the shelling was accompanied by a reconnaissance plane that fired surface-to-air missile.
Causalities were inflicted, the news agency said, without specifying further details.
On Friday, fierce clashes erupted between the Lebanese army and gunmen on the outskirts of Arsal.
Jihadists from al-Qaida-linked al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State group are entrenched on the outskirts of the town on the porous Syrian-Lebanese border.
The army engaged in a fierce gun battle in August with jihadists who streamed across the border.
Fighting ended with a truce mediated by clerics, but the jihadists took with them the Lebanese army and police hostages.
At least four have since been executed and Qatari-led efforts to free the rest have so far failed.

The army must now take decisive action in Arsal, level it off, raze it to the floor if need be, all this soft approach because of one leadership or the other will serve us nothing, it will in fact only worse the predicament of an army that must get out of its straitjacket if we all don't wish to sink into another catastrophe.

I don't understand your call for the army to level a supportive Lebanese village to the ground. The army is stationed in Arsal and shelling rebel positions outside Arsal. My cousin is a high ranking officer in the LAF and he is stationed in Arsal. The closest Nusra position to Arsal is 2 km. By leveling Arsal what do you gain.?!

Galaxy, do forgive me if I sound quite harsh, me too I've high ranking officers in the army as relatives. I do accept your views where it refers to Arsal's supportive resident, but then not all of them are supportive. ISIL and Nusra where able to enter the town because it got inside support. Then well before this past August, Arsal was also in the limelight when it caught members of the Lebanese Army and slaughtered them in cold blood. To me who is military or if you will, militia thinking, when a place becomes infected by people who will allow Non-Lebanese to come and kidnap Lebanese, and also when such a place falls from the very inside, yes, I'll level it off and start from a clean slate. Sorry, but that's my approach to Arsal.

Army pushes forward. If there is anyone to handle the job, of freeing Arsal, then it is the LAF. If they ever get that green light, from the corrupted M14, then we will all celebrate. Minimize the civilian casualties, by evacuating them, then isolate the takfiris, the Nahr Al Bared way.
