Geagea Says Political Hustle in Lebanon Useless, Calls on Parliamentary Blocs to Elect President

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea considered on Tuesday the flurry of political activity that the Lebanese capital is witnessing to press the election of a new head of state “useless.”

“The election of a new head of state is a mere Lebanese process that relies on the parliamentary blocs,” Geagea said in an interview with the Saudi newspaper al-Jazirah, lashing out at the two blocs that are impeding the process, the Free Patriotic Movement and its ally Hizbullah.

The LF leader stressed that he will exert efforts to reach common grounds with the FPM over the presidential deadlock, saying: “Even if we failed to bridge the gap concerning the presidential post, I will not despair.

“I have the impression that we will be able to progress.”

The country's top Christian post at the Baabda Palace has been vacant since President Michel Suleiman's term ended in May.

Both Aoun and Geagea have announced their candidacies for the presidency. Their rivalry and the failure of the different parties to agree on a compromise candidate caused the vacuum at the presidential palace.

Asked about his recent visit to Saudi Arabia, Geagea described his ties with Riyadh as “historical,” noting that the Gulf country is seeking to establish a strong Lebanese state “capable of maintaining its security and stability.”

“The Saudi support to Lebanon is always granted through the state and its institutions without any distinction between the Lebanese.”

Saudi Arabia and France inked in November in Riyadh a deal to provide the Lebanese army with $3 billion worth of French weapons, with Riyadh footing the bill.

Saudi Arabia had also pledged to grant Lebanon a $1 billion aid for the army.

The grants comes as the Lebanese army is battling gunmen and jihadists, including from the Islamic State group, in the north and along its northeastern border with war-torn Syria.

Geagea told his interviewer that the Mustaqbal Movement is in constant coordination with its allies in the March 14 alliance, in particular regarding the dialogue with Hizbullah.

He expressed belief that the differences between Hizbullah, which is a Shiites party, and al-Mustaqbal, which is a Sunni movement, isn't sectarian but “a dispute between two political agendas.”

The Caporal has deserted all his past words, principles and values. Do not count on him, he is mentally ill.
After his "me or nobody"; he has now moved to : "me or the chaos".
He is doing it and destroying the institutions and the Christians with it.

"The Saudi support to Lebanon is always granted through the state and its institutions without any distinction between the Lebanese.” - Geagea

Oh really, how come we didn't see the 3 billion $ then? Because they will only be handed to you, if you become President. Never for the sake of the LAF.

mystic
it seems you have an assimilation problem: the contract is signed and deliveries will start in January :)
stop showing us how stupid you are! enough is enough.

Thumb Mystic 23 December 2014, 11:59

We've heard that, for the past 12 months now geha.

No deliveries made so far, the Saudis withheld them, as soon as they realized the Lebanese Army will fight back against their takfiris.

(1). What is absolutely clear now is that Geagea no matter how well-meaning he may be, does not enjoy M8 support. Now regarding Aoun, even his own side at M8 has reservations on him, no wonder why HA was so late in crying out for his candidacy. HA wants a fully compliant no-questions-asked rubber stamper like Aoun, thus Geagea for them is definitely out of question. Now that we've exhausted all possible avenues, the burning question, why question our capabilities at finding other people who in my opinion will fill this post a lot better? To question if we have such good people remains beyond question. Masalan, why can't we opt for a great person like Dimianos Kattar, just one such brilliant person?

True ya Slash, sad, very sad, but for a glimmer of hope.

Missing greatpierro 23 December 2014, 17:49

the issue is that ha does not want a truly lebanese president that world to reinforce the state institutions, the army, the isf, the political and administrative work. HA strives on the weakness of the state and as such a beheaded political instituions suits HA too well. Aoun is a pain béni for HA as his megalomania serves them too well.

(2). Dimianos is known for his unimpeachable integrity, honesty, professionalism and patriotism, so why is he not elected? Are the mafias of the M8 or M14 clans so worried that this man will bring about the much feared Audit? I know one thing, we Lebanese deserve such a good man, so let's stop the procrastination, it is costing us tax payers money and our time. It is plain obvious that between Geagea and Aoun, we shall remain in eternal suspension, therefore now is the time, let Bkerke make its voice heard, Bkerke knows perfectly well who Dimianos is, now after decades of sore mismanagement of this country, we Lebanese deserve the very best, Dimianos is one of the best choices.
