Naameh Municipal Chief Vows 'Huge Protest' against Landfill Extension
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةThe head of the municipality of Naameh said on Tuesday that the residents of the town, which lies in the Shouf district south of Beirut, are planning to hold a demonstration near the landfill whose closure was extended by the government.
“We are preparing for a huge sit-in near the Naameh landfill starting January 17,” Amin Fakhreddine told Voice of Lebanon (100.5) radio.
“The extension of the dump is rejected,” he said. “We will not back off.”
On Monday, cabinet members approved a plan to extend the closing of the landfill for three months and for another three months if the waste treatment project was not implemented by then.
The deadline for the end of the dump's operations expires on Saturday.
The government agreed to extend for the same period two other contracts that also expire on Saturday.
One contract is with Sukleen, which is responsible for collecting and transporting the garbage in Beirut and Mount Lebanon. The other is with Sukomi company that treats the waste transferred to the Burj Hammoud dump by Sukleen and takes them to Naameh.
G.K.
H.K.
Money, money. Corrupt politicians. No wonder why Lebanon ranks so low in the evaluation of Transparency International.
what a humbling comment, especially coming from someone who supports the most corrupt politicians the world has ever seen.
If only ex-premier Rafik Hariri wasn't brutally assassinated. I hear he was planning to build advanced recycling plants using the money siphoned during his tenure. How unfortunate.
Yeah, Naameh, start building plants to get rid of the trash, in few weeks stop getting any from other areas BETTER than talk and talk... act.
