Synod of Maronite Bishops Calls for 'Lebanonizing' Presidential Elections
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةMaronite bishops concluded on Thursday their four-day synod by urging political powers to overcome their disputes and work towards filling the vacuum in the presidency.
They said in their closing statement: “We should 'Lebanonize' the polls and elect a new head of state.”
They called on lawmakers to head to parliament and perform their national duty.
“The elections are not restricted to Christians, but the whole of Lebanon is concerned with the presidency,” they declared.
Moreover, the bishops called on “friendly countries” to support Lebanon to end its crisis.
They also hailed the dialogue between the Free Patriotic Movement and Lebanese Forces and the talks between Hizbullah and the Mustaqbal Movement.
Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi later held a mass to mark the end of the Synod.
He reiterated before the congregation the need for political foes to resolve their differences, urging them to “assume their historic responsibilities and for MPs to elect a president.”
“We must sit together, hold frank talks, and reach a reconciliation,” he added.
Officials should not abuse their authority for obstructing state functioning, stressed al-Rahi.
Lebanon has been without a president since May 2014 when the term of Michel Suleiman ended without the election of a successor.
Ongoing disputes between the rival March 8 and 14 camps over a compromise candidate have thwarted the polls.
Hizbullah's Loyalty to the Resistance and MP Michel Aoun's Change and Reform blocs have been boycotting electoral sessions over the dispute.

How can you Lebanonize anything as long as we have a claoun like Aoun who wants to Aounounize everything? By definition, Aounounization is simply a cloak of falseness over the real character of his role, to give this country of ours to Hezbollah, who in turn will give it to Iran and who will in turn use it for the benefit and survival of the Syrian regime. To Lebanonize is a noble thing, but lest we forget the jester claoun who has never hesitated screwing up this country every time he is around. May his time come soon, dakheelak...
the only way to lebanonize anything is simple let the lebanese people decide i.e. let true democracy be at work
all leaders can be bought but nobody can buy all the people
god bless democracy
oua nakba, so you want the Muslim majority to elect the Christian president a good way to return the rights to the Christians. Reminds me of how Aoun return the post of General security head to the Christians like he promised by kowtowing to Nasrallah's choice the Shiite Abbas Ibrahim.
On the one hand because of the religious doctrines which is embedded in the upbringing and education system, and on the other hand due to the feudal political system which encourages divide and rule strategy, it becomes impossible that all the Lebanese will think and act as one nation. All current attempts are waste of time . Solution? - yes : 2 countries.
