Russia Hits IS in Syria Heartland in Defiance of West

Russia bombed the Islamic State group's Syrian stronghold Saturday and vowed to press its aerial campaign despite criticism from Washington and its allies that its military action was strengthening the jihadists.

A long-time staunch backer of Syrian President Bashar Assad, Russia began sorties over its ally on Wednesday in what it said would be a prolonged bombing campaign against IS and other extremist groups.

Top military officials in Moscow said their warplanes pounded Syria on Saturday after a strike that blew up a command post in Raqa, IS's de facto capital in Syria, taking to 60 the number of sorties carried out so far.

The United States and its allies have condemned Russia, accusing it of seeking to buttress Assad under cover of a claimed assault on IS.

President Barack Obama on Friday called Russia's dramatic intervention a "recipe for disaster" but pledged Washington would not be drawn into a proxy war.

Putin "doesn't distinguish between ISIL and a moderate Sunni opposition that wants to see Mr Assad go," Obama said, using an alternative name for IS.

"From their perspective, they're all terrorists."

British Prime Minister David Cameron said Saturday that Russia was aggravating the situation.

"It's absolutely clear that Russia is not discriminating between ISIL and the legitimate Syrian opposition groups and, as a result, they are actually backing the butcher Assad and helping him and really making the situation worse."

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged Putin to reconsider his strategy.

"I will definitely speak to Putin," he said. "I want to understand why Russia is so interested in Syria."

- 'Panic and desertion' -

Putin has said Moscow's air strikes are pre-emptive, stressing the need to hunt down IS militants before they cross into Russia, which has a large Muslim population.

Its entry this week into the Syrian conflict is Russia's first major military engagement outside the former Soviet Union since the occupation of Afghanistan in 1979.

A senior officer in Moscow said Russia’s latest raids had forced hundreds of IS militants to flee.

"Panic and desertion have started in their ranks," said Colonel General Andrei Kartapolov, from the Russian General Staff.

"Some 600 mercenaries have abandoned their positions and are trying to find their way into Europe."

Russia's defence ministry said Saturday morning that, over the previous 24 hours, SU-34 fighters jet dropped a concrete busting BETAB-500 bomb on a command post in the area of Raqa.

"A powerful explosion in the bunker means that it was also used by terrorists to store a large amount of ammunition," it said, releasing a video of the strike.

It said Russia's jets had also destroyed an ammunition warehouse near the city of Jisr al-Shughur and targeted a training camp belonging to IS near the town of Maaret al-Numan, both in Idlib province.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said six civilians, including a woman and her four daughters, were killed in Jabal al-Zawiya, Idlib province, in the latest strikes thought to have been carried out by Russian warplanes.

- Field hospital hit -

Another four suspected Russian strikes hit the IS-held town of Al-Qaryatain, in central Homs province, said the group, which relies on a network of sources on the ground for its information.

But raids ordered by Moscow have also hit areas controlled by moderate groups that are fighting Assad and even prompted a claim by U.S. Senator John McCain that Russian jets had killed rebel soldiers trained and funded by the CIA.

Russia said its strikes this week had destroyed IS positions in northern Aleppo province, neighboring Idlib province and in Hama in central Syria.

But several military sources and the Observatory said Russia had hit areas controlled by groups other than IS.

The Observatory also says Russian strikes had killed several civilians and wounded doctors in a raid on a hospital in Hama.

It said Russian raids on Friday hit a field hospital in the village of Bernas, in the western province of Latakia.

Activists said the hospital belonged to Doctors Without Borders (MSF), but the group said it only formerly funded the facility, while confirming it had been damaged and saying there were no casualties.

British Defense Secretary Michael Fallon said just five percent of Russian strikes had targeted IS.

The Syrian conflict began as an uprising against Assad's rule in 2011 but has splintered into a multi-front civil war with government troops, moderate rebels, jihadists and Kurdish forces all vying for control.

More than 240,000 people have been killed, with four million more forced to flee the country.

A U.S.-led coalition has been bombing IS positions in Syria since September 2014 but the extremists have still managed to take ground, including the ancient desert city of Palmyra, a U.N. world heritage site.

Monday Aug 26, 2013 a date remember... on that day, Lavrov said :

"Moscow had no plans to be drawn into a military conflict over the civil war in Syria and that Washington and its allies would be repeating "past mistakes" if they intervened in Syria."

"The use of force without the approval of the United Nations Security Council is a very grave violation of international law," Lavrov told a news conference at which he discussed accusations by rebel forces that Syrian government forces have used chemical weapons."

استطلاع للرأي العام الروسي أجراه مركز “نيفادا”، أظهرت نتائجه معارضة 69 في المائة من المواطنين الروس لتقديم روسيا الدعم المباشر (إرسال قوات) لنظام بشار الأسد.

russians will not do any miracles there. They will only protect damascus and the east coast where their naval bases are. that is their purpose

Russia hits everywhere they please, there is nothing the West can do about it.

All the so called "moderate rebels" are in reality just Wahabis that wants to ban women from driving and implement Wahabi rule in Syria.
This is what the March 14 alliance of Lebanon wants for Syria and Lebanon, look at Geagea for instance, he sold his christianity and now favors Wahabism.

Mystic,
When I watch the wahabi future TV I see very western looking women on the screen. When I watch your progressive Almanar, I see lots of wahabi-looking women (the kind you describe). Do you mind explaining this puzzle to me?

2 minutes ago Moscow said its Syria strikes sowed "panic" as 600 "terrorists" abandoned their positions.

funny indeed... so the russian invaders expect the rebels to stay put and not move an inch...;)

Thumb justin 03 October 2015, 18:01

lol and they could count them as well, 600 exactly! The Russians will soon reap the same aggression right inside Russia.

@.Southern_.
Are you really that naive or simply pretending?
If you really believe Russia's motives are based on their standing up for the weak guy, one suggests you need to reconsider
Whereas Iran was the master of Assad's Syria, it now has to relinquish that to Russia.
If Putin' strategy is as good as his tactics, he will retain the option to give up Assad at the appropriate time. IMHO, for Putin the price is Western recognition of him as a strong Russian leader. Whether that comes to pass remains to be seen.

The Russians know how to fight. The Americans don't want them there because they know the Russians can eliminate the terrorists and restore stability in Syria. The Americans want the war in Syria to continue for decades. God bless Russia and Putin.
