Govt. authorizes Fayyad to build power plants in Deir Amar, al-Zahrani

W460

Cabinet on Wednesday approved the energy minister’s plan for building two new power plants in the northern area of Deir Amar and the southern region of al-Zahrani.

MTV said Energy Minister Walid Fayyad also proposed setting up a plant in the northern area of Salaata, adding that the suggestion was rejected by Prime Minister Najib Miqati and Culture Minister Mohammed al-Murtada of the Amal Movement.

Fayyad meanwhile denied MTV’s report.

“I did not speak of building a plant in Salaata because this will be a long-term move, whereas I want to achieve results rather than trigger controversial debates,” Fayyad said in remarks after the session.

Whereas corporations and nations are pledging to be carbon neutral in couple of decades, Fayyad’s electricity plan is backward looking, full of corruption pitfalls, depends on Assad grace and expensive imports, and will bankrupt and pollute Lebanon. It does not mention renewable knowing well that Lebanon is blessed with solar, wind, hydro, and wave power. Is Fayyad aware of UAE Masdar contracts to generate solar power for 2.4 cents a KW or Saudi contract for solar power at 2 cents/KW? Does he understand solar is more efficient in high mountains than desert as PV negatively affected by heat? Is he aware of WDRVM, a Syrian firm producing large wind turbines (WT)? Has he considered off-shore WT near Tripoli islands, today’s cheapest form of energy? Hydro & microhydro power? benefit of distributed power and net-zero? Is he aware 20% incentive means 80% from private funds quadrupling power output? Or 4 solar panels provide 30 yrs of free 15,000 KM/year for every EV car?

Dear, it is highly costly to install renewable energy sources like solar, wind, hydro, and wave power as you put it!
Besides wind turbines are highly polluting since they are produced from rare metals which production is energy monger and polluting.
We need fast solutions and the cheapest in the short run (Fayyad) and then tomorrow Gibran Bassil's son will take charge of making electricity great again (in the long run).

Geralt, check for yourself below references. Plus Europe is paying to recycle wind turbine blades. With lower imports, Lebanon can use excess ship capacity to get paid to use put these blades to good use. Cut them into hollow boxes, fill with concrete, and use non-rusting fiber glass blades as reinforced steel http://www.renewableenergyworld.com/articles/2017/10/saudi-arabia-gets-cheapest-bids-for-solar-power-in-auction.html

Beside, any project financed today while under Basij occupation, Lebanese will end up paying multiple time the cost due to political instability and financial risks. Simple calculations you can quickly check:
A peaceful well governed nation can get loans at 2% yearly interest. Political instability increases interest to 6%-10% for same loan. Add a country controlled by a criminal militia funded by a belligerent country, interest will exceed 15%. Easy to verify these simple calculations:
A loan payable in 30 years cost:
80% more if interest=2%
474% more if interest=6%
1645% more if interest=10%
6521% more if interest=15%
That is why our banking system and Lebanon are bankrupt. Hizbollah and its puppet traitors (Aoun, Berri and company) have costed Lebanon hundreds of $billions.

Fayyad should get up to speed on Carbon Trade as Lebanon can rightfully earn $billions by reducing fossil energy (see Tesla balance sheet) not to mention reduce pollution and health cost. From the $45 billion wasted on EDL deficits, only $20 billion would have converted Lebanon to fully renewable energy. With EV car revolution, a $4 billion investment in Giga-battery factory, employing thousands would have gradually converted cars to EV, supplied Middle East, and in time provided backbone for energy grid stability. Tunnels financed by tolls from Beirut and Tripoli ports to Bekaa and Akar would take most trucks of roads, reduce energy and crashes, and improve port attractiveness. Monorail from Tripoli to Tyr to connect cities and reduce energy, congestion and pollution. Even lakes from future dams could be covered with PV panels. Still with our mountains, valleys and sea, wind turbines remain cheapest energy source. Unforgivable waste!
