Report: Hezbollah insisting on Franjieh, doesn't mind lengthy vacuum
Hezbollah has recently told Paris that Suleiman Franjieh is its only presidential candidate and that is not willing to engage in any other discussion, a media report said.
Hezbollah is willing to “wait until the summer of 2024 or the summer of 2025 if (Franjieh’s election) doesn’t take place in the summer of 2023 and there is no fear over institutions as long as the U.S. is paying the salaries of security forces,” al-Akhbar newspaper quoted Hezbollah as telling France.
Hezbollah has also encouraged Franjieh himself to “end his waiting and see what he can do, similarly to what president Michel Aoun did when he visited the Center House and Maarab and knocked on Clemenceau’s doors several times,” the daily said.
Moreover, Hezbollah “communicated with domestic parties to pacify their stance on the Marada chief,” al-Akhbar added, noting that “the French were thirsty for such a drive from Hezbollah in order to revive their initiative … seeing as the Macron administration will not find it easy to acknowledge a new failure in Lebanon.”
Saudi-Iranian agreement is not based on new found love or change in objectives, rather buying time from both sides to inch closer to their aim. Saudi is focusing on economic development and growth to keep internal peace. Vision 2030, Neom, and investing in traditional and digital industry are expensive and require outside investments. Political instability and military attack from Yemen increase economic risk scaring foreign investment and quadrupling cost of long term projects. This deal buys stability for few years enabling economic revolution and industrial modernization to proceed. Iran did not give up on regional hegemony. Hizbollah will remain its Foreign Legion outside Saudi deal and ready for action in the future. Similar with its militias in other countries. The period of reduced tension will allow Iran to blackmail Russia for advanced arm technology while shielding its internal oppression from Arab media that is already achieved. Lebanon in Basij den first to pay the price.
