Lebanon receives 'letter' threatening EU sanctions on vote boycotters
Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry has received a letter threatening European Union sanctions against MPs who fail to attend presidential election sessions, an official source told MTV on Tuesday.
Media reports have said that foreign threats to impose sanctions on vote obstructors are what pushed Speaker Nabih Berri to say that “the presidential election should be finalized before June 15 at the latest.”
Other reports said that Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Walid Bukhari has called on Lebanese officials whom he met in recent days to elect a president as soon as possible or “face international sanctions.”
While I strongly oppose the existence of our corrupt ruling class, I find it concerning that the European Union (EU) is going beyond acceptable boundaries by issuing threats to Members of Parliament who would choose to boycott a parliamentary session. In my opinion, a more reasonable approach would have been to impose sanctions against the Parliament Speaker for his decision to close down our democratic institution.
By targeting the individual responsible for closing down parliamentary proceedings, the EU could have sent a stronger message against the violation of democratic norms. This approach would have been more logical and aligned with the principles of accountability. However, the EU wouldn't target the CIA's number one asset in Lebanon.
The EU as I've said before is a useless institution. Bunch of socialist bureaucrats who want to run people's lives.
I agree with you @i.report they should target individuals and especially the speaker and he's been the one obstructing the vote. Also isn't his gazillions stored in Swiss banks? They could freeze them and seize any property he has in Lausanne, his favorite vacation spot if I recall.
@Rabiosa, The situation is quite intriguing when we observe that despite his sons being involved in a large-scale drug smuggling operation in the United States, there seems to be a noticeable absence of any significant consequences. It is worth noting that within the American legal system, the repercussions for even a single pill of captagon can result in a lengthy imprisonment of up to 20 years. They're all working for the 3 letter agency.
