US bombs dozens of sites used by Iran-backed groups in Iraq, Syria

The U.S. military launched an air assault on dozens of sites in Iraq and Syria used by Iranian-backed militias Friday, in the opening salvo of retaliation for the drone strike that killed three U.S. troops in Jordan last weekend, officials told The Associated Press.

President Joe Biden and other top U.S. leaders have been warning for days that the U.S. would strike back at the militias, and they made it clear that it wouldn't be just one hit, but would be a "tiered response" over time. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss military operations not yet made public.

The initial strikes by manned and unmanned aircraft were hitting command and control headquarters, ammunition storage and other facilities. And they came just hours after Biden and top defense leaders joined grieving families to watch as the remains of the three Army Reserve soldiers were returned to the U.S. at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

It was unclear what the next steps will be, or whether the days of U.S. warnings have sent militia members scattering into hiding, making it more difficult for the U.S. to detect and strike them. But it was evident that the recent statement released by Kataeb Hezbollah, one of the main Iran-backed militias, saying it was suspending attacks on American troops had no impact on the administration's plans to strike back.

The U.S. strikes also appeared to stop short of directly targeting Iran or its Revolutionary Guard Quds force. Iran has denied it was behind the Jordan strike.

They'd better not have killed anybody.

DAMASCUS, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- At least 13 pro-Iran fighters were killed in U.S. airstrikes that targeted strongholds of pro-Iran fighters in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour on Friday night just as the U.S. was readying retaliatory strikes against Iranian targets, a war monitor reported.

3 days ago, the USA via the Swiss embassy asked Iran if they could symbolically bomb an Iranian base in Iran. The answer was obviously negative. So they communicate.. I’m confident the bases used by the IRGC in Syria and Iraq were evacuated ahead of the strikes…

I published a Jordanian denial that the attack occurred at Tower 22 base of US forces in Jordan but instead at Al-Tanf in Syria, and then a denial that there was a Tower 22 base in Jordan. As of Saturday morning in US, Al Jazeera has this: "Reporting from Baghdad, Al Jazeera’s Mahmoud Abdelwahed said on Saturday that the Iraqi resistance, which includes Iran-aligned groups, carried out attacks, with missiles targeting the al-Tanf military base in Syria that is home to US personnel, as well as the Ain al-Assad base in western Iraq."

"Widespread unrest could threaten the rule of King Abdullah II, a key American ally. Jordan initially denied the Tower 22 base existed within its border after the attack Sunday." That's the AP's JON GAMBRELL last Monday. "What is Tower 22, the military base that was attacked in Jordan where 3 US troops were killed?" Jordan may have just been saying that whatever was hit by the drone was not in Jordan, and Gambrell read into that a denial that Tower 22 was in Jordan.

These two denials came from the same "information minister" or something like that. I won't look up in browser history to see where I read them. Probably RT.com. The point is Jordan is playing both sides against the middle.

Jordanian Minister of Government Communications Muhannad Mubaidin on Sunday also confirmed to Jordan's state-run Al Mamlaka TV that an attack had targeted the al-Tanf base in southeastern Syria, affirming that no attack targeting U.S. forces occurred on the country's soil.
