Berri on Hochstein's visit: Situation is better now

W460

Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has said that U.S. mediator Amos Hochstein's visit to Lebanon on Wednesday has created "positivities that can be capitalized on."

Expressing relief over the visit's outcome, Berri told Asharq al-Awsat newspaper that "the situation today is better than yesterday."

"Utmost efforts are being exerted now to reach a ceasefire in Gaza," Berri added, saying a truce in the Palestinian strip would "reflect positively on the Lebanese arena."

Hochstein's visit is "a message from (U.S. President Joe) Biden that he has not forgotten Lebanon," Berri went on to say.

Media reports meanwhile said that the U.S. envoy asked Lebanese officials to help "prevent an escalation prior to the expected (Doha) meeting that will discuss a ceasefire in Gaza."

Funny (and not in a "ha ha" kind of way) that Berri makes no mention of presidential elections ...

"One of the lawmakers who met with Hochstein said he focused with Berri and Mikati on the urgent need to elect a president."

The situation would be even much better if the Government of the Republic of Lebanon re-negociated with the Government of the State of Israel, the agreement reached and signed in the second half of the 1980's, an agreement that was unfortunately thrown out by the then Syrian occupiers of Lebanon.
