Iran preparing imminent missile attack on Israel, US official says
"The United States has indications that Iran is preparing to imminently launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel," a senior White House official told AFP on Tuesday, speaking on condition of anonymity.
"We are actively supporting defensive preparations to defend Israel against this attack," the official said in a statement, warning that such an action "will carry severe consequences for Iran."
White House officials did not immediately offer any evidence backing its intelligence finding. The official added that the administration was confident in the determination.
Iran’s state media has not suggested any attack is imminent. Iranian officials could not be immediately reached for comment.
Iran already launched an unprecedented direct attack on Israel in April, but few of the Iranian projectiles reached their targets. Many were shot down by a U.S.-led coalition, while others apparently failed at launch or crashed while in flight. Even those that reached Israel appeared to miss their marks, experts and an AP analysis in September showed.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a Tuesday statement that Israel is facing “large challenges” as it fights an Iranian axis. In the videotaped statement, he urges the public to listen to public safety guidelines from the army’s Home Front Command. He made no direct mention of a missile threat.
The Israeli military said it has not detected an incoming aerial strike from Iran "for now", after a U.S. official said there were indications of an imminent missile attack.
"For now, we have not detected any aerial threat launched from Iran," military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said, adding that the Israeli army was "prepared to defend and attack" Iran in the event of a strike launched from the Islamic republic.
It is much more like Israel knowing everything going on in Hezbollah, than Iran briefing the US in advance ...
"Since the challenges to Iran’s influence will not automatically translate into a formula for stability in Lebanon and the region- indeed, Iran could try to reassert its control by other means, including support for sectarian militias- the Arabs have a window of opportunity to play a role vis-a-vis Iran and assure it that off ramps are available.
It is also an opportune moment to bolster Arab influence in Lebanon, not merely through humanitarian aid but through political initiatives that take advantage of the partial but substantial vacuum left by the events unfolding in the country."
