Interior Minister Marwan Charbel visited Roumieh prison on Saturday where he presented checks to inmates whose jail sentences were complete and who also cannot afford their bail.

He revealed that future steps will follow this one at other jails in Lebanon.

“This is a humanitarian measure that is aimed at easing the overcrowding at the jail,” he added.

“The government will also seek to benefit from this measure in that it will no longer have to bear the burden of a prisoner who competed his sentence and has still remained in jail due to his inability to meet bail,” Charbel said.

The funds were presented by Minister Marwan Kheireddine, the Talal al-Maqdissi social development organization, and businessmen Amal Abu Zeid and Michel Daher.

Frequent riots had been staged at Roumieh jail due to the poor conditions at the jail.

"This is a humanitarian measure that is aimed at easing the overcrowding at the jail" There are just buying spaces in jails! it has nothing to do with human rights, or the like!....
