Speaker Nabih Berri is committed to his suggestion to adopt proportional representation for the electoral law, reported As Safir newspaper on Monday.

To this end, his advisor Health Minister Ali Hassan Khalil and that of Hizbullah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Hussein Khalil, are expected to hold talks on Thursday with Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat on the electoral law.

The meeting will tackle the elections amid the MP’s objection to proportional representation, which he said is aimed at limiting his political weight.

In addition, the meeting will pave the way for talks at Ain al-Tineh between the speaker and Druze leader, said As Safir.

Berri had told An Nahar daily in remarks published on Monday that the adoption of proportional representation and establishment of a senate would maintain the fair representation of Muslims and Christians in Lebanon.

The senate, he said, would act as a national assembly for Lebanon.

Berri had also appointed his advisor to hold talks with a number of officials, starting with President Michel Suleiman, to explain his suggestions.

This proportional representation election law, is a Trojan Horse launched by pro-Syrian Lebanese proxies to enhance the power of Hezbollah in its areas. Where there is no political competition, the law which allows competing parties a proportionate distribution of seats regardless of whether the candidate won a majority will have little impact. South Lebanon and the Bekaa where Hezbollah's competition is not allowed, Hezbollah will do fine. Where Hezbollah competes and its money is paid, in areas like Baabda or Keserwan, rather than win nothing, they will win something by coming close.
Where there is multiparty competition such as in Mount Lebanon, Beirut and the North, M14 territory, this law will allow M8 inroads where their candidates can get close, but not win majorities. Jumblatt in the Chouf will surely lose out.
Though advertized by M8 sources as pro-democratic, this, it surely is not. Never believe those who preach democracy, but who practice dictatorship through arms.

M8 at the time pressed the gvt to apply the 1960 law, seeing it didn t work out as they wanted , of course they want to change...

Basically,it is a small reward to jumblat for not pulling his boys from Mikati's gov.
