Prime Minister Najib Miqati stressed on Sunday that a decision was taken not to provide political cover for any security violator in the northern city of Tripoli, the scene of deadly clashes since Saturday.

Miqati said the decision was taken following consultations with all the political, religious, security and social figures in Tripoli.

“Important measures will be taken in the upcoming hours,” Miqati told reporters after the meeting at his Tripoli residence.

The country’s Higher Defense Council was scheduled to meet later on Sunday in Baabda to discuss the explosive situation in the northern city.

Miqati said he will hold talks with Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi “because there are several points related to the judiciary” concerning the crisis in Tripoli.

He noted that he will ask the minister “about the progress of the investigations and on whether there are real charges,” referring to the city’s Islamists who have been observing a sit-in since more than a week to protest the detention of their relatives and comrades without trial.

Asked about the arrest of Salafist activist Shadi al-Mawlawi, whose capture on Saturday by General Security agents had sparked the unrest, Miqati said: “We discussed the manner in which the arrest took place and it is rejected and condemned.”

“All the MPs, ministers and figures are against the method of arrest,” the PM said, stressing that “the judiciary and the investigation will have the final say.”

If this guy killed or assassinated any Lebanese citizen then throw his butt in Jail and we could careless whether he is salafist or shaytan or how you detained him. If this guy is a bridge to any external group whether it's Syrian or Israeli then cut the BS and stop showing muscles on our own citizens because EVERY external group was involved in destroying our Country for 30yrs and that's from Israel to Syria to Iran to US. Let's open our eyes and wake up that every external force is using our Land and our weaknesses to pass their own political delima.

The title is sooo wrong: "Miqati Says Decision Taken Not to Politically Protect Tripoli Security Violators"
I wish it read this way instead:
There shall be no security to those who provide political cover for any security violators now and at any time in the future.
Lebanon's security should be built into its institutions and constitution, not in decisions made by Mafia Godfathers.

No matter what this government on paper wants or does not want, the actions are dictated by Hezbollah and their arms. If Hezbollah wants these people detained, then regardless of all the ministers, deputies or officers of the paper government, the actions will continue undeterred which is working, probably, to spill over the conflict in Syria to Lebanon.
As Hezbollah wants, to relieve the pressure on Assad.
For those of us in the South, we all know that if there is pressure on the levy and it may break and flood the city, the solution to to blow up the levy up stream so that the river will flood elsewhere and spare the city.
Lebanon is still the Syrian pressure relief valve and Hezbollah is still at its post

Bringing the sectarian conflict to the Lebanese interior will bring for the Syrian regime a much needed diversion and will erode further the Lebanese sovereignty to benefit the weird but real alliance between the salafists and Hezbollah.
Dismantling the Lebanese entity is the main goal of Iran and the means are not limited to supporting sunni extremists in order to achieve this goal.
