U.N. Leader Says al-Qaida in Syria

U.N. leader Ban Ki-moon said Thursday he believes al-Qaida committed a major bomb attack in Damascus that left dozens dead, and that up to 10,000 people have now been killed in Syria.

Ban said President Bashar Assad has still not implemented a peace plan agreed with U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.

"Very alarmingly and surprisingly, a few days ago, there was a huge serious massive terrorist attack. I believe that there must be al-Qaida behind it. This has created again very serious problems," Ban said at a youth event at the U.N. headquarters.

Suicide attackers detonated huge bombs in Damascus on May 10, killing at least 55 people and wounding nearly 400.

Syria has accused al-Qaida of orchestrating attacks in the country in recent weeks, adding to the strife caused by the uprising against Assad.

"More than 9,000, at least, maybe 10,000 people have been killed during the last 15 months. It has reached an intolerable situation now," Ban said.

US and Russian officials have also said they believe al-Qaida and other violent militants are now operating in the country.

This month, Syria sent the United Nations the names of 26 mainly Tunisian and Libyan nationals it said had been detained. About 20 had confessed they were members of al-Qaida, according to a letter sent with the list.

Ban also highlighted two bomb attacks against convoys of U.N. ceasefire monitors in Syria.

The U.N. secretary-general said that apart from the deployment of the monitors, no part of the six-point Annan plan has been implemented.

"We are trying our best efforts to protect the civilian population," Ban said.

The deployment of the monitors has had a "dampening effect" and reduced the violence, "but not enough, not all the violence has stopped. So we will continue, as much as we can, to protect the civilian population," he added.

you are so blinded by hatred that it makes you say such stupidities... and forget that syria is the country that harbours the most terrorist organisations (christians, sunnis or shias!) that they manipulate according to their needs!
just reread what your beloved orangina leader said about that....

Missing peace 18 May 2012, 11:03

i wasn t told any crap mowaten unlike you...funny how al qaeda has called for saudi people to revolt against the regime there if they were under their control!!don t you think?

syria harbours the most terrorist groups from all religions to manipulate them at their will... many experts said a few months ago that this would happen the day the syrian regime would feel in a bad position! i prefer to trust people whose jobs is analysing geostrategy issues than el manar or OTV!

you cannot deny that, these are facts, but you gently close your eyes and repeat the crap you were told....

this is pure Kaeda propaganda, how come most al kaeda are Saoudis? how come no terrorist actions are carried inside KSA? come on people think.
Anyway just like KSA king and the Harriri family Bin laden is Wahabi this is just to tell how deep their terrorism goes

Missing peace 18 May 2012, 12:05

"how come most al kaeda are Saoudis? " oh really? educate yourself... al qaeda is everywhere and its members are from many countries...
i guess because they were trained and financed by the USA at their beginning it also means that al qaeda is american according to your FPM logic?
come on! stop your stupidities

"and you base yourself on what info?"
well educate yourself and read about it...

"were the 9/11 attacks orchestrated by syrians too?" stupid comment that has nothing to do with the subject!

"aoun said once that syria is a terrorist state. it was in the context of the syrian occupation to lebanon and the terrorizing tactics the mukhabarat were known for."
he also said that the day syria would leave lebanon they would leave behind them their intelligence apparatus and send islamists groups to destabilize the country....is it out of context? NO = you are the one deliberately forgeting what your hezbi puppet said just to justify his unjustifiable alliance with those he called terrorists for decades...!

Missing peace 18 May 2012, 11:48

and the only ones dividing the country are your friends the hezbis!
they want the country divided to better control it as syria does and your orangina puppet is participating to it like you are....
your hezbi friends don t care about lebanon! as long as it is weak - and they are doing everything to keep it that way - they can keep their arms and obey iran.... with the benediction of aoun.

Man KSA controlled the country solo from 2005 to 2011 through HArriri jr and Sanioura, it had a joint venture on it during the inglorious Rafic HArriri days, so we ALL know who flushed the country into deep debts and who gave weapons to salfis and terrorist such as Jend el sham aka jind el set bahia, Fat7 el islam....

oh ! funny! the USA used them for their purpose in afghanistan... why wouldn t syria use them too for their purpose now? esp many experts predicted that when you were saying that everything was under control in syria!
think a bit beyond OTV....

Missing peace 18 May 2012, 15:01

yes i guess you find it normal to ally with a party you called terrorist for decades = it only shows how FPM shits on its dignity for money...
i guess you find it normal that a political party is above the laws and threatens lebanon and has the right of war and peace but not the state = it shows how patriot and democrat you are.
i guess you find it normal that a political party takes arms against the gvt when they disagree on a law and kills lebanese = it shows how respectful of the laws you are...
you call for half the population of lebanon to be murdered because they oppose you = it shows how human you are....
all your arguments points against you my poor little idiot... you ve reached the bottom of stupidity but you arestill digging!

"i guess you find it normal that a political party is above the laws"... peace throughout Lebanese history Political parties were above the law before HA existed. Was the army able to interfere in 1958 battles or afterwards? It is too weak and the western imperialists wanted all Arab governments to be weak. The problem we have in the Arab world is that we have weak (mostly western puppet) dictators that allows Israeli aggression to exist. The 1975 war was because of that....the Palestinians are the only refugees that do not have a RIGHT OF RETURN. The reason Al Qaida exists and HA exists (and I am not comparing them together) is because we have weak mostly western puppet governments or those ruled by lousy dictators. And, you can never separate Lebanon from the middle east.

Hariri was installed by Syrian mukhabaret. He used to shower them with money and daily praised them when they were in Lebanon ruling Lebanon. I think M14 change towards the baathists is greater than Aoun.

yes and 9/11 the americans did it themselves ... :) you are too comic but coming from a aouni it doesn t surprise anyone; how pathetic you are after going and licking the boots of the USA when orangina needed it and praising its democracy!!
you d better shut up instead of ridiculizing yourself at each post you send...

"and 9/11 the americans did it themselves"..well, you are saying that the Syrian government is bombing themselves. Do you believe the Iraqi government have been bombing themselves for all of these years? Peace you are full of contradictions if you pay attention to what you are saying. You can not defend M14 without being a bigger hypocrite than M8.
