Report: UAE to Expel Some 1,000 Lebanese Expats
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةThe United Arab Emirates will expel around 1,000 Lebanese expats living in the country as President Michel Suleiman is scheduled to head to the gulf state on Wednesday.
Some of the Lebanese expats, who were expelled during the past few weeks, were forced to sign a document claiming that they support Hizbullah or that they are carrying out “illegal security acts,” al-Akhbar newspaper reported on Tuesday.
According to the daily, UAE authorities gave the Lebanese expats the choice to either enter prison or sign the confession documents.
Most of the expelled Lebanese hold visas issued by Abu Dhabi authorities, the daily noted.
The report comes as Suleiman is scheduled to tackle during his visit to the UAE the travel advisory against Lebanon issued by its authorities and three other gulf countries, including Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar.
According to the daily, the president will also address the UAE authorities’ decision to expel 1,000 Lebanese expatriates.
In May, the UAE issued a travel restriction advisory urging its nationals in Lebanon to leave the country because of the "unstable security situation".
The mainly Sunni Muslim oil-rich state is home to about 100,000 Lebanese.
although in principal i agree, and I dont think he should go there and talk instead of take action, do you realize that they are our main source of income (tourism)? Also, there is a reason there are thousands of lebanese who work there. Its because we have a shit country with no jobs.
so what is a lebanese to do if the gulf closes down its doors for good on employment? what do you think all those graduates getting poorer by the second are going to do?
we're in a very tight spot here, and we're not in a position to make threats. BUT, this should be addressed when this crisis blows over, instead of ignoring it like the lebanese people usually do and go on with their lives caring about where they will meet up tonight
it is so easy to launch threats and show indignation while the lebanese livelihood depends on jobs in the gulf.
to clarify: hey do not need us to run their business as they can get any other nationality to replace us.
now, we want to go there and work and nasrallah and his camp keep interfering in the gulf affairs, so what do we expect as a result of that?
I like the UAE and its leaders. They have managed to save our asses so many times over and over again. The helicopter that assisted our poor army defeat the terrorists at Nahr el Bared came from them. Our polluted and destroyed land is no good to them anymore. They re passed the whole Lebanon is the Switzerland/jewel of the Middle East bull crap. 90% of our families feed of the money that comes from the Gulf expats. We need to keep our mouths shut as the UAE does not tolerate major democratic principles. When in Rome... do as the Romans do!!!!
OH silence yourself with this whole ultra lebanese nationalism we can work anywhere rubbish.... Lebanese people are not capable of working anywhere! The rest of the world is in economical depression and would much rather find jobs for their unemployed citizens!! Those who have jobs are considered lucky nowadays. How about you start with finding the expelled 1000 jobs. Go ahead the world is yours!!
i think u never went out of leb to work... tell me where a 23 old grad from leb can get a work visa , and worse, who is willing to sponsor him !
Whose National Pride F.T? That of M8 or M14? We Lebanese have little National Pride as we seem to follow other nations based on religion or financial interests. The golden rule is when you are in another country respect their values/rules/policies/etc. This is what we wanted from the PLO back in the 60s and 70s and instead they were instrumental in devastating Lebanon. If you want to criticize anyone there is plenty to criticize within Lebanon,
hahaha, are you serious? hahahaha, what very very very poor thinking you have. Since when could we work anywhere (where did you get this knowledge from)? And what national pride are you talking about? haha yeh, our nationality is going to put food on our table right? lol if our own government does not care about us - what kind of pride do you speak of? Dude wake up!! WAKE UP!
Another bad hit for Lebanon's image abroad. On top of that, this summer season will also be badly affected, the damage is already done.
all hezbola supporters around the world mjarsina - from brazil to australia
lashou wadoulna yehon ? can't they go to iran? - i heard it's a great country with alot of opportunities
some lebanese bi jarso anywhere they go (same in brazil australia canada etc.)
let them gom to iran why coming back to lebanon - mesh na2esna
We deserve it...we did this to ourselves..hope one day all we die from hunger and lebanon does not exist on the map anymore....
Grow a spine and learn that nothing comes easy. If you don't like Lebanon, you're welcome to leave. I'll even call a taxi to take you to the airport. Where do you live?
The shiite Iranian terrorist militia have sullied the image of the lebanese abroad once more just like they did back in the 80s when they used to kidnap westerners on behalf of the ayatollah to exchange them for Israeli arms to Iran.
Im not Shia but this angers me... Stupid... You know everyone despite our messed up country we are relatively MUCH more tolerant then Most Arab Countries with one another ... except tripoli "( ... i.e. we've had wars with each other but before, we did live together well and after we did Ok and were still doing not bad... Im not taking about the Politicians I'm talking about Lebanese people and Im talking relatively speaking you know. I have really good friends from all the sects in Lebanon... if only our politics could be as friendly.
This is done to make problems in Lebanon. While they are supporting democracy in Syria, they are kicking some lebanese out because of their religion. Even if these people are not hizballah supporters, they will be with a vengeance.
what your are saying is to have all lebanese kicked out of the gulf, i.e. drain the lebanese source of income.
FYI we depend on the gulf for our survival and you guys all you know is to be aggressive.
"these trash countries are nothing without the lebanese. " we call that a complex of superiority! they can make do without you FT! lebanese are not the ones who support their economy...
The problem is a sunni shia fight for power, and the christians have to pick a side . I side whith the hezb , because there honest and they get things done, they have put more into our country then anyone. everyone els just bark like dogs. and hariri and 14march just keep trying and trying to rip this country up. I think they mite get what they want this time around turning the syrian conflict into a lebanese problem.
1000 with fake passports . A sleeping cell. They have every reason to keep their country safe from terrorism. I wish Lebanon would do the same.
Time to act instead of kissing ass, A serious stand from the Lebanese Gov supported by all Politicians stating that your acts against your Lebaneses Brothers are not acceptable anymore, and that could harm the relation and even maybe more... Understand it the way you want...
Lebanon is a shit hole. The country provides nothing for its citizens and now is even causing problems for those who chose to make lives abroad. No work, no stability, no security. Thats why anyone who can leaves. All it has is a few good nights out.
You will never resolve your internal problems by blindly following politicians and parties based 99% on where you come from and who you father or family supports.
Agreed with Mustapha. What are we really offering them in Lebanon if we can't even be smart enough to Unite against the Southern, and Northern neighbor? everyone knows damn well we need BOTH because only competition will create peace and conquer over both neighbor jealousy of the land.
I feel sorry for these guys losing there jobs ,what is there to do in Lebanon it is about time us Lebanese united together for the sake of our country and build a strong nation god bless you ya habibi ya Lebanon .
First of all none of the March 14 supporters are Wahabis, in fact most of them, do not know what wahabism is. On the other hand, all March 8 supporters are aware of the Faqih rule and Nasrallah has been very eager to portray it as the most divine and best rule that can ever befall a human society. The same way your "wahabist" claim has ZERO justification, these guys were kicked out. It is unfortunate, but the UAE is probably not ready to witness a rift between its Shia and Sunni community. We can all agree, that the recent events show that Lebanese Shias and Lebanese Sunnis are witnessing a tense relationship. You might ask why Shias not Sunnis, very simply because any Shia could be part of Hezbollah, and has to support Hezbollah if he wants to go to heaven (isn't that what fatwa is all about?), whereas a Sunni in Lebanon has choices.
Where did I mention all Shias? The Shias that support Hezbollah (who are unfortunately the majority) are the ones I am talking about. My comment was in response to a comment removed, I do not blurt out non sense like that if it was not for a reason. We need more people like you, what matters is not who you support as long as you do not support March 8.
@Flame thrower...OH silence yourself with this whole ultra lebanese nationalism we can work anywhere rubbish.... Lebanese people are not capable of working anywhere! The rest of the world is in economical depression and would much rather find jobs for their unemployed citizens!! Those who have jobs are considered lucky nowadays. How about you start with finding the expelled 1000 jobs. Go ahead the world is yours!!
This is typical from Gulf countries. Someone, somewhere is not happy with Lebanese, specifically Shia Lebanese, for some reason, and decided that this particular bunch should go home to make some place for Philippinos (can't blame them...). So after much deliberation among themselves to make it look like this is a rational and collective decision, they put the decision into action.
To avoid legal troubles and accelerate the departure of these targeted persons - in the fear that some of them should try to make use of the few right they have (yes foreign workers have rights there - I know, it's surprising) they involved the police as described in the article.
Now you can't really trust the account of the "victims" either, they have a tendency, Lebanese people in particular, to exaggerate or even make up things. But what I described, is closer to the UAE reality then the image most people here have, I believe. How much of the commentators of this article have ever lived in the UAE?
it is unfair to punish those working outside the country for the stupidity of others. These people are doing an honest days work to support their families. Somthing that is not possible for the to do in their own country. At least they are working for a living not sitting in coffee shops smoking nargille complaining about their lives and talking politics while their relatives support them!!!!!!!!
There is a difference between supporting Hezbollah and carrying out "illegal security acts." What is wrong with supporting Hezbollah? Why should they be expelled for that? I am thinking this is just another case of the Gulf Sunni versus the Levant Shia. What both the Sunni and Shia have to do is realize that the foreign powers are playing with them like toys.
This is Racism !.!... lebanon and all lebanese are way ahead of all middle eastern country's ,with our lifestyle ,our community's and our value for life. we love life and we live it. its the political set up in lebanon that fuels the problems. they should make ahzeb against the law, instead of influencing students and children and adults to follow this guy or that guy . i think we are better off being rulled by a outside country, then nobody would fight.and every lebanese would get along."im serious " its the politicians that fuel the violence. if there were no lebanese involved in running lebanon, we would have the best country. look how good lebanon dose even in such harsh circumstances.
I think the problem is most ppl in the gulf ALREADY believe you are being ruled by an outside country. Not tryin to troll or get involved in ur internal politics but maybe a view from the gulf would help. Sure lebanese ppl are way ahead in lifestyle and community thats why we visit lebanon, but that does not mean you have a superior culture to ours which is what some see this as. Us coming from the desert and riding camels somehow you think this insults us, which it doesnt we are proud of our heritage. Anyways we seem to be getting the same tones from there as we were getting from the Shah in Iran(and Safavids before him) that gulf arabs eat "lizards" while irani dogs drink cold water. My point being, in order for meaningful dialogue these things shouldn't be lurking in peoples heads, which sadly they are at the moment.
Greetings to the Emirates, it's people and government. This should have been done long ago. I sincerely hope other Gulf States including KSA will soon emulate. I also hope that the expulsions will not be limited to immediate HA supporters but will encompass others such as Aoun supporters.
FT: "that's a real opportunity to make things work in your own country lebanon instead of directly looking outside for job opportunities."
lol! you d better ask then to increase the salaries to the level of those in the gulf if you want people to stay here! you are a dreamer !
@LiesThrower, have you apologized for advocating shooting M14 supporters in the head and dissolving us in acid? What? No? Not yet? Seriously dude? Can't you see what a worthless and unproductive citizen you are by spewing such hate and advocating such violence against your fellow citizens who disagree with you? Apologize dude, you'll feel better and by doing so, you demonstrate that you are possibly a human though I doubt it personally.
as long as this gvt boast the goodness of the iranian regime it is understandable that they expel lebanese from the gulf...this gvt along with hezbollah has given a very bad image of the country with their unconditionnal support of the syrian regime killing its people and its obedience to iran thru hezb.they reap what they sow!
If Lebanon was such a great place, every man and his donkey wouldn't be looking to leave. The Lebanese expat population is huge, and 99% won't ever settle back in Lebanon. Here in Australia, almost none of the third generation immigrants consider themselves Lebanese in any way. And who could blame them.
Anonymoustexasusa,
Accuracy is the key to success in life,so if your gonna throw numbers out make sure your accurate,or my friend you lose credibilty, I wasnt gonna respond cause I figured someone wouldve called you on your falonious stats, but since they didnt I will, only 8 countries consider HA a terror organazation,Australia, Bahrain,Canada,Egypt,Israel,Netherlands,UK,and US...Have a good day.
I think the UAE authorities should be able to know how to run their own country without your advice. If they judge that it is in their country's interest to deport 1000 foreign residents no matter their nationality or religion, it is their full prerogative and entirely their business and no one else.
@ Flamethrower, Lebanese people , or most of them, do not have dreams. they long for power, appearances, money at all cost. I repeat , not all oof them , but a good 60%. I realise there are some good left, that have dreams and are going outside of Lebanon to make them come true. These are the only ones raising the lebanese identity elsewhere. In lebanon, it is but a jungle where the fittest survives and the weak perishes. It is sad but true. We have tried and friends as well to open businesses in Lebanon, but the concept of " 3al 7seb " for everything, is something that killed us and made us leave. We had to follow almost every customer to court in order to get what is rightfully ours. and most of the time without success. There is no law, no order , no nothing.
lebanon is like a 1000 747's filled with gold food water love and respect. Theres 1 driver for all planes ,and he drinks heavy, when he drinks he feeds the passengers drugs, when he is sober ,its all tabouli and smooth sailing . ! lol
The racist lebanese are divided in to two camps: one that says "to hell with the low desert gulf arabs, we dont need these camels" when in reality lebanon would die without them and the other camp looks downs on gulf arabs even more than the other camp but they still choose to kiss butt for the sake of their money. Nobody is more moral than the other, both are racist, arrogant and low. The gulf should cut off their aid to lebanon completly, kick out the lebanese and stop spending in lebanon and then we will see how the big headed lebanese will survive. Lebanon would fall apart in 2 seconds if it werent for the very gulf arabs you look down upon.
@ everybody, the problem of the lebanese is that we think we are superiour to evrybody, i dont even know why... Yes we had a banking system which is one of the strongest in the world, for its secrecy but lets face it, it no switzerland anymore , whoever pays off the manager of a bank gets to know how much his fellowmen have money in their accounts and that is not a joke but the truth. Lebanese business around the world yes, they are successful but look in Africa, they dominate the continent with their businesses but in what ways? most african people will tell you they have treated them bad. Why do you think when there is an uprising in their countries the lebanese are the first ones kidnapped? I know because i know lots of people that work in several countries in Africa. Lebanese people have nothing to be proud of. Yes there are honorable lebanese men that have been placed in high positions in the world without beeing thugs or haters, but very few .
What we should be proud of is our past, not our present or our future which is not looking good. In reality we must work to be proud of our present and future as well. Why the hell sshould we always say , look lebanon WAS the switzerland of the middle east, WAS paris of the middle east... Lebanese in canada have an awful reputation, they came after the war, blamed canadians for mistreating although they pushed deadlines for universities specially for lebanese, gave them help, a shelter, anything they needed. on top of that, many took advantage of the welfare system in canada as well as social aids and medical treatments without even living there.
I remember not long ago maybe 3 years ago, they put up in the newspapers : more than 10,000 Lebanese caught stealing the canadian state while not even living there. I was ashamed because i was in a restaurants with lebanese friends as well and everybody was talking about that. I am a patriotic man but i cannot stand up defending my people on such shameful accusations...
