Army Deploys along Northern Border with Syria to Restore Calm

The army deployed on Saturday in Akkar along the Lebanese-Syrian border to restore calm in the area, warning that it will not tolerate with anyone tampering with the country’s stability and security.

“An army unit deployed in the towns of Akroum and Beit Jaafar to separate the gunmen,” the army’s communiqué said.

On Friday, clashes renewed between residents from the rival towns of Akroum and Beit Jaafar in the northern district of Akkar near the border with Syria, after a man was killed in previous fighting.

The statement noted that the army responded to the sources of fire and restored security and stability in the area.

The army is also carrying out “wide raids on the whereabouts of the culprits.”

It warned that it will not tolerate with those who are “toying” with the security and stability of the citizens.

The army also called on the residents of the border towns to cooperate with the military forces and to inform of “any suspicious cases” in order to deal quickly with them.

On Wednesday, a man was killed and several injured when men from Sunni-majority Akroum village clashed with the majority Shiite village of Hourani.

The man killed was from Akroum.

Lebanon's borders with Syria have seen frequent violence, with regular exchanges of fire in recent weeks, some of them deadly, as well as shelling from Syria into Lebanon, stoking fears of a spillover of the Syrian crisis.
