Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn warned on Thursday that the deadly gunbattles among the residents of the northern city of Tripoli could spill over to other areas in Lebanon.

In remarks to Voice of Lebanon radio (93.3), Ghosn said: “The continued fighting in Tripoli could affect the entire country.”

“The army hasn’t backed off or changed the course of its presence in its bases in Tripoli,” he said.

It “is seeking to control the situation based on the facilities made available,” Ghosn added.

Severe gunbattles between the two rival neighborhoods of Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh since Monday have left scores of casualties, including army troops.

Ghosn called on Tripoli’s personalities to take effective measures to help the army restore order “because all sides, despite the differences in their viewpoints, reject fighting and blood.”

“Everyone should assume his responsibility,” the minister said.

If the army can't control the situation in Tripoli, then it will be impossible to control the situation in Lebanon.
The politicians are to blame for not controlling the situation and arresting the persons involved in the incidents occuring in Tripoli.

Piggy ghosn is just preparing us to a new civil war spread from syria. His is not imposing the army's will on the ground. We have regiments capable of wiping out easily all those criminals of all affiliations in Tripoli. But that wont be done because they need a " Qarar siyassi". I mean where in the world does the police wait for orders from MPS or President or Prime minister to keep law and order? they are independant entities and should not ask for permission from their superiors only in case of war with another country. come on people...
