President Michel Suleiman praised on Monday the army on its efforts in defending Lebanon and maintaining civil peace.

He stressed on the anniversary of the end of the Nahr al-Bared clashes the “importance of internal unity and national will in allowing the security forces and army in fulfilling their duties towards the nation and people.”

He also noted on the occasion the “suffering of the Palestinian residents of the refugee camp who were wronged because of the terrorists living among them.”

Clashes erupted between the army and Fatah al-Islam militants in the Nahr al-Bared Palestinian refugee camp in northern Lebanon in May 2007 and ended in September of that year.

Some 400 people were killed in the unrest, including 168 soldiers.

Suleiman later held talks with Interior Minister Marwan Charbel on the security situation in Lebanon, especially the army and security forces’ efforts to maintain stability in the North.

Internal unity or not the Lebanese Army MUST have an "Iron Fist" to crush each and every attempt to de-stabilize Lebanon regardless of who is behind it internally or externally.

No more nice guys, it is time to take full control of the border and the country. Schedule few public hangings for the perpetrators or better yet get a firing squad ready. And you start by executing the killers of Captain Hanna!!!

What was the crime of fatah al Islam. I think the reason why certain people resort to violence is because of there environment. Unfortunately the palestinian in Lebanon are treated like fourth and fifth class citizens. The Assyrians and Armenians have more rights and they are less in number. Why isn.t the Palestinian allowed ownership or denied to work most jobs. The is clear discrimination. I wonder if they were Shia or Christian if they would be treated like this.

Christian Palestinians have far more rights/privileges.

Exactly who are the Palestinians in Lebanon? They are mostly second, third and fourth generations who were born in Lebanon, and so are not in actual fact Palestinians.

I totally disagree with our president, the army should be independent, as it is in Egypt or Turkey. Lebanese political factions are reknown for their foreign affiliations, the army is the only institution we can and should rely on for our defense. Understand, we don't want or need anyone to give it instructions to follow.
