Report: Miqati Didn't Hand in Resignation, But Voiced Readiness to Step down in Favor of New Govt.
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةPrime Minister Najib Miqati did not present his resignation in light of the assassination of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau head Wissam al-Hasan, reported Al-Joumhouria newspaper Monday.
It said that the premier did not speak of resigning to President Michel Suleiman or the cabinet.
Miqati told As Safir newspaper in remarks published on Monday that he did not hand in his resignation, but he had repeated to Suleiman what he had said months ago that he is willing to resign if an agreement over a national unity cabinet is reached.
“I accepted this position out of my convictions to protect the country and its people, especially people from my sect,” he stressed.
“These two issues will be at the heart of my actions until Lebanon ends its national struggle that has been going on for years,” he said.
His sources told al-Joumhouria that the premier's resignation could be one of many options to end the crisis.
Moreover, Miqati's other sources told al-Joumhouria that he received contacts and messages from international and European powers that highlighted the importance of calm and stability in Lebanon.
The sources told As Safir that the fact that the prime minister received contacts from U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius after opposition supporters' attempt to storm the Grand Serail is a sign of an international will and backing for the government to remain in power.
Opposition supporters attempted on Sunday to storm the Grand Serail in downtown Beirut after Hasan's funeral, demanding the resignation of Miqati and his cabinet.
Miqati is expected to travel to Saudi Arabia to perform the hajj pilgrimage this week.
Let us be realistic and stick to the facts..The balance of power is in the hand of Hizballah, they are the strongest military speaking! Can anyone tell me which lebanese faction is able to defeat the mighty military power of HB/march 8?
it has become a normal and accepted fact for March 8 that their opponants are eliminated physically. Aounists display cynisism about it when they joke about May Chidiac. Hezbollah and Amal repeat over and over that it is the doing of Israel.
It is truly disgusting.
I don't really care if Miqati stays or goes, but the current government must disband. Hizbshaytan ministers will not resign, and neither will Claoun's ministers, so the only way for this collaborating government to end is for Miqati to resign.
It is a freakin joke that this government is made up of ministers loyal to the butcher Bashar Assad and psychopath Khameni. It is also a joke that Hezbshaytan is allowed to be part of government after their members were indicted for killing Rafik Hariri.
Miqati may not be a bad person, but he is the one who consented to be part of this cadre of criminals.
The cabinet that hides assassins and blocks telecom information of murderers!!
I bet everyone that in a 100 years nothing will change...lebanon history is still the same, similar scenario but with different actors....look back in the history during the ottoman era, same absurdity!!
Taking to the streets and leaving Lebanon in the hands of thugs is not what we expected from the leaders of March 14th. They have a great way of screwing up a good cause.
the blood of all Lebanese is on his hands from now on. the love of power is driving this guy to hang on even if all Lebanese are killed.
Smallah march 14 are such lying opportunistic thieves. They stole our ideas and desecrated them. they fight in our name and add nothing but shame to it. they monopolize our ideas as there's. My choice between an idiot disrespectful thief and a close minded murderer is nether. yesterday was a disgrace, we need new representation for moderates. M14 are scum with no plan but to fill their pockets, all they have goin for them is that the other goons r worse. Fuk both of you, most if not all Lebanese people i know don't agree with what you are doing. conspiracies my ass! They killed a good man that was protecting us.
Point fingers all you want and vice versa can be said. the logic here is i hold the people i thought were representing me accountable. Because i truly care for this country, when march 8 took power i said great, inshallah khier , good luck. but sadly they were even worse. our basic needs and prospects have been dashed by incompetence and division. this has been the worse year or 2 since the civil war. Calling others traitors will get us no where. i hope your eyes open and once a real party or leader comes along you will walk with me and we will all walk for a decent future. these idiots will croak soon, god willing. and it is in our hands to change the crap they left behind at least for our children.
We do not want resignation and then months of chaos... We want an immediate investigation that, GIVES NAMES.. and punishes them..
