Gaza Rockets Hit Tel Aviv as Conflict Death Toll Reaches 15 Gazans, 3 Israelis

Two more Gazans died as Israel pressed on with a major bombing campaign across Gaza on Thursday, raising the death toll to 15, and Palestinian fighters fired more than 250 rockets over the border, with two of them hitting the Tel Aviv area.

As Palestinian deaths from relentless air strikes on Gaza mounted, Defense Minister Ehud Barak gave the go-ahead for 30,000 reservists to be called up and the military said it was "in the process of expanding the campaign."

Egypt, meanwhile, announced that Prime Minister Hisham Qandil would visit Gaza on Friday to express his country's solidarity with the Hamas-ruled strip, as Washington urged Cairo to use its influence to try to halt the violence.

But Gaza's ruling Hamas movement remained defiant, ruling out any talk of a truce even as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned he was ready to "significantly expand" the campaign against the territory.

"In the past 24 hours, Israel has made it clear that it will not tolerate rocket and missile attacks on its civilians. I hope that Hamas and the other terror organizations in Gaza got the message," he said, as Gaza medics reported 15 Palestinians killed in two days of air raids.

"If not, Israel is prepared to take whatever action is necessary to defend our people."

Soon after he spoke, a rocket hit the sea just south of Tel Aviv, an Agence France Presse correspondent at the scene said, the farthest that a rocket from Gaza had ever landed inside Israel.

The attack sparked panic in Tel Aviv, with television images showing people lying on the ground outside the defense ministry, their hands over their heads as sirens wailed.

In a televised news conference shortly after the sirens sounded, the military's official spokesman said that no rocket had "hit the ground."

Israeli news networks said it was the first time rockets had been fired at the city since the 1991 Gulf War, when it was hit by Iraqi Scud missiles.

The armed wing of the radical Islamic Jihad quickly claimed it had fired an Iranian-made Fajr 5 rocket at the sprawling coastal city in central Israel.

Earlier on Thursday, a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip struck Rishon LeTzion, some 15 kilometers (nine miles) southeast of Tel Aviv, the Israeli army said, but there were no injuries or damage.

Experts said it was most likely an Iranian-built Fajr 5 from Hamas' arsenal, which have a range of up to 75 kilometers (46 miles).

"There was a rocket that hit in an open field in the Rishon LeTzion area. There were no injuries or damage," an army spokeswoman said.

The city, Israel's fourth largest with a population of some 228,000, lies about 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of the Gaza Strip.

The Qassam Brigades assumed responsibility, saying in a statement they "launched a local rocket at Tel Aviv" -- which could imply the rocket was in fact not a Fajr 5.

Netanyahu said earlier Thursday the Israeli air force had "caused significant damage to the Fajr rockets aimed at Tel Aviv, the (surrounding) Dan region and north of that."

The army's official spokesman warned that the military was expanding its campaign.

"The defense minister approved a few minutes ago, based on the army's request, the recruitment of another 30,000 soldiers. We will determine how many of them will be called in," Brigadier General Yoav Mordechai told Channel 2 television. "All options are on the table."

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri insisted the Islamist movement was not interested by talk of a truce.

"We consider talk of a truce at this time an attempt to provide more cover for the continuation of the escalation," he told a news conference.

Israel's biggest military campaign against Gaza in nearly four years began on Wednesday with the targeted killing of top Hamas commander Ahmed Jaabari, triggering a major flare-up in and around the tiny enclave which is home to 1.6 million Palestinians.

The violence, which erupted as Israel heads towards a January general election, sparked expressions of deep concern internationally and prompted an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council.

Since the start of Operation Pillar of Defense, the military said it had carried out more than 150 air strikes as armed groups fired more than 200 rockets at southern Israel.

So far, 15 people have been killed in Gaza, among them seven militants and three children, a woman and two elderly men, and 150 people have been injured in scores of Israeli strikes, medics and health ministry officials said.

And in the southern Israeli town of Kiryat Malachi, police said two men and a woman were killed when a rocket hit their home, and that another 19 people had been injured in various areas, among them three soldiers.

The Israeli operation prompted an outpouring of anger across the Arab and Muslim world, with Tehran accusing the Jewish state of "organized terrorism" and Qatar's premier saying the strikes "must not pass unpunished."

Egypt's Islamist administration, which has close ties with Hamas, immediately recalled its ambassador in protest, but in a surprise development, announced that Qandil would visit Gaza with a number of ministers on Friday.

U.S. deputy State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had spoken with her Egyptian counterpart.

"We ask Egypt to use its influence in the region to help de-escalate the situation," he said.

This is another example of how Hamas can be categorized as a terrorist group perpetrating war crimes. Hamas is using civil houses to store its long range missiles as well as sending missiles on civil populations in Israel.

No it is a question of facts only. When the FSA are hiding or firing in civilians areas then they are committing war crimes. When the hizbullahi were fighting the Israelis in South Lebanon the Israelis called them terrorists but in fact they were resistants and heroes.
We should be intelligent enough to be as unbiased as possible.

Thanks Mowaten for providing the funniest joke of the day. Here's a quote from the genius:

"Since 2006 there were 0 israeli attacks on lebanon, that's the longest period in decades without the traditional "summer bombardments""

I'm still laughing. It's funny on so many levels.

Israel has responded when provoked. The hizzies foolishly launched a cross-border attack in 2006 and Israel responded. The fat rat admitted it was a mistake. Afterward, UN troops now patrol the border area, and he has been a good little boy (with respect to the southern neighbor). Yes of course he is still committing crimes and killing political opponents in Lebanon, and sending jihadists to support the butcher in Syria, but no more overt acts against Israel.

The only reason Israel hasn't sent bombardments is because the hizzies have kept the border quiet (following the resistance example set by Assad in Golan). Go ahead and send another Katyusha into Israel and see if they won't respond back.

You should ask yourself where was the Hizbullah hiding its arm depots and missile launchers? In dense civilian areas. Whether we like or not the Israelis, they are fighting a war and they hit where the arms are located. That is why I am making this point: whoever locate weapons in civilian areas is a war criminal because innocent civilians are exposed to direct hits.

There are hospitals in Gaza, and plenty of schools.
Not that I'm trying to protect Israel's horrendous record on hurting civilians and civilian infrastructure - but if it was indeed their main strategy, we'd be hearing of Gaza hospitals and schools being hit, which we're not...

The igniting of the Gaza front brings again senseless death and destruction to the Palestinian people. This confrontation was started in order to create a diversion from the Syrian crisis and to channel the wrath against the Regime towards Israel.
The Syrian Regime, aided by the Iranians, counts on the obssession with Israel to blind the Arabs from concentrating on its hideous crimes and barbaric repression of the Syrian people.
At the end innocent civilians from both sides die again for nothing.

Missing yarden 15 November 2012, 13:58

It was also orchestrated by Israel in order to solidify support for Netanyahu's government ahead of elections slated for Jan 22, which just comes to show that the extremists, on both sides who claim to hate each other, cooperate in their use of violence to support their sectarian agendas, and suppress any notion of normalization and moderation.

Thumb independent 15 November 2012, 16:15

Some people are so politically brain washed it makes me sick. Israel doesn't need Assad. The rebels are backed by the US, Saudis and the French. Those countries will never let the Rebels touch Israel or they will cut funding and military help. The only reason Israel is attacking Gaza is to solidify Netanyahu's support and allow him to win a majority in the current elections.

Default-user-icon Skyfall (Guest) 15 November 2012, 16:29

@ Mowaten, what is happening in Gaza is sad but it was expected. The zionist have always worked to erase any kind of palestinian armed resistance. But lets not forget Bachar Al Assad who is butchering palestinians as well in their camps in Syria. Syria and Israel are indirect allies and it has been that way since the end of the israeli-arab war. And lets not forget of course as well the massacre of Hama in 82 by Hafez el assad , more than thousands of palestinians massacred. All this arab and zionist hypocrisy. Lets find a diplomatic way to regain shebaa and integrate hezbollah as the south regiment in the lebanese army . Disarm refugee camps in leb. Let the palestinians take care of their problems alone.

Missing phillipo 16 November 2012, 12:25

What rubbish.
If Israel wanted to erase any kind of Palestinian Armed Resistance, they would not have withdrawn all their citizens and army from there 5 years ago. They believed that as a result of the withdrawal the Palestinians would being to sit down and talk with them on a Peace Treaty.
The Palestinians don't want peace, under Arafat they could have had it 20 years ago.

Iran and Russia cannot have oil near 80/brl. Tensions in Israel are raising price of oil. You figure it out.

Do some checking and you'll see Iran and Russia will go broke with oil at 80. Now you see who is behind all this and why?
