Meshaal Says 'Israel Failed in its Goals'
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةHamas chief Khaled Meshaal said on Wednesday that Israel had "failed in all its goals" after a Gaza truce deal came into effect, while thanking Egypt's President Mohamed Morsi for his support.
"After eight days, God stayed their hand from the people of Gaza, and they were compelled to submit to the conditions of the resistance," Meshaal said.
"Israel has failed in all its goals," he told reporters in a Cairo hotel.
Meshaal also thanked ceasefire mediator Egypt, as well as Iran, which he said "had a role in arming" his Islamist movement.
"I would like to thank our dear Egypt, aided by the brave elected President Mohamed Morsi... Egypt acted responsibly and understood the demands of the resistance and the Palestinian people," he said.
Meshaal also praised Iran, despite "disagreements on the situation in Syria".
The truce accord, a copy of which was obtained by Agence France Presse, calls on Israel to "stop all hostilities... in the land, sea and air including incursions and targeting of individuals".
It also urges the Palestinian factions to end "rocket attacks and all attacks along the border".
The agreement also said Israel would facilitate entry of goods into Gaza, which Israel has blockaded since Hamas violently seized the enclave from Palestinian Fatah rivals in 2007.
Meshaal said the agreement meant that all the crossings into Gaza would be opened.
He added his movement had "rejected Israel's conditions" for the ceasefire "except for stopping operations".
And the Hamas leader warned Israel against violating the agreement.
"If you commit, we will commit. If you do not commit, the rifles are in our hands," he said, adding "we will continue to arm ourselves".
He said an attack on a Tel Aviv bus that injured 17 people on Wednesday "was assisted by God at the right moment to send a message".
Islamic Jihad leader Ramadan Shallah, who sat next to Meshaal, said "what happened was an exceptional failure in the history of" Israel.
"We will strive to acquire all we can to defend ourselves," Shallah said.
Earlier, Egypt announced the ceasefire agreement would come into effect at 1900 GMT on the eighth day of Gaza-linked violence that has killed at least 155 Palestinians and five Israelis.
If the cease-fire means that the Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists cease firing their rockets discriminately against Israeli civiklian targets, then Israel has achieved its' goals.
Egypt has finally showed Hamas and the rest of the Arab world that it firmly based on the side of sanity, and will do all within its power to keep a firm hand over activities in and around Gaza, including stopping arms from reaching there through Egyptian territory.
"The agreement also said Israel would facilitate entry of goods into Gaza"
As far as everyone in the world as seen over 200 trucks per day were carrying goods, food etc into Gaza through Kerem Shalom crossing. Can anyone tell how many were going in through Rafah crossing. Not to mention the electricity, water and petroleum products that Israel was supplying. What does Maashal want, that Israel allows military material through. Let him keep dreaming.
Why don't you go to Gaza and live there for a week or two. Then you can give your opinion. You make it sound the palestinians have no reason to revolt or complain. Don't talk about terrorism, when Israel bombed the hell out of Lebanon, these were not all military targets.
I've been there and seen the situation. So I can certainly give my opinion. Have you been there, that your knowledge of the situation is so great?
Seven years ago Israel left the Gaza Strip and only Palestinians lived there.
Five years ago the Hamas terrorists overthrew the elected Palestinian leadership, killing many Fatah supporters and set up their own government. (They have no reason to revolt, that has already been done.)
They could even then lived a quiet and comfortable life if they wouldn't have started firing rockets into civilian towns and villages across the border in Israel, incurring Israeli retaliation. (They have no reason to complain, they brought it on themselves)
lol yea a true victory for the palestinians.....when are you people actucally gonna wake up and stop believing the crap that comes out of these so called leaders!
Long Live The Syrian Civil War!
Long Live The Gaza War!
lol.. these victories are coming at a dime a dozen these days... i am happy the PEOPLE of Palestine are not suffering anymore under the Israeli Bombs, but i pity them that with a leader like Hamas and an enemy like Israel, they will suffer again....soon.
Mansour - as I have said before - why "Long Live The Gaza War!"?
The only loser in that war, as everyone except Meshaal and Heniya know, is the Gazan civilian population.
