Italy Says will Vote for Palestinian Status at U.N.
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةItaly will vote in favor of granting upgraded status to the Palestinians at the United Nations later on Thursday, the government said, despite earlier press reports that it would abstain.
"Italy has decided to offer its support for the resolution giving Palestinian non-member permanent observer status at the General Assembly of the United Nations," the government said in a statement.
"This decision is an integral part of the Italian government's commitment to relaunching the peace process with the aim of a two-state solution," it added.
Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti called Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to explain his decision.
Monti told Netanyahu "this decision does not imply any distancing from the strong and traditional friendship towards Israel," the statement said, adding that Monti believed Israel had "the right to guarantee its security".
Monti has visited Israel twice since becoming premier in November 2011.
So, assuming that the resolution passes today, what exactly will be the difference on the ground for the ordinary Palestinian in the West Bank (the area controlled by the Palestinian Authority)?
Absolutely none.
So maybe, the Authority will change their letter head and signs to "State of Palestine". Foreign countries which want to establish diplomatic relations with the State of Palestine will have to have them based in Ramallah, not Jerusalem.
Will I be able to fly from the UK (or anywhere else in the world) to the State of Palestine ? As until now, no.
So what has it go them?
"sure u cant travel to palestine."
Sure I can, simply I fly to Amman and cross the Allenby Bridge.
"palestine and israel to have discussions as equals"
Ask Abbas why he hasn't wanted this for the last two years.
Also remember the date.
What the Arabs could have had on this date in 1947 (yes 65 years ago) they are not even getting today. A free, independent State of Palestine, recognised by the world, just like Israel is.
From what I see on the TV and read in the newspapers and on the computer I don't see Israel freaking out.
All I see is Israel waiting for Abbas to say in both English and Arabic that he is willing to sit down and talk peace with Israel.
Until now he has said one thing translated into English, and another for domestic use in Arabic.
"legitimate claim to their Land" When exactly was it their land?
There has never been a Palestinian State since the birth of Islam, the West Bank was occupied from Jordan, and the Gaza Strip from Egypt, so what exactly do the Palestinians place their claim to "their" land?
