Army Contains Dispute between Two Families in Bab al-Tabbaneh

The army intervened on Wednesday to contain an individual dispute, that soon spiraled into an armed clash, between two families in Tripoli's Bab al-Tabbaneh neighborhood.

According to the state-run National News Agency, the dispute erupted between men from Srour and others from Sharkas families.

A man from Srour family was wounded and submitted to a nearby hospital.

Tripoli has been witnessing deadly clashes between supporters and opponents of the Damascus regime for several years now.

The majority of Bab al-Tabbaneh residents are Sunni and back the revolution against Syrian President Bashar Assad, while Jabal Mohsen's residents are mainly Alawites from Assad's sect.

On Tuesday, Army Commander General Jean Qahwaji reiterated that the military will remain firm in confronting sedition and preventing culprits from dragging the country into the turmoil in the country.

“The army will intensify its measures with all the available means to maintain stability along the (Lebanese-Syrian) border town,” Qahwaji said after inspecting army basis in eastern Lebanon.

He called on the military to be prepared to “confront all the challenges and threats.”

Mortar and artillery shells from the Syrian side often explode in Lebanon.

In March, members of the U.N. Security Council "underscored their grave concern over repeated incidents of cross-border fire which caused death and injury among the Lebanese population, incursions, abductions and arms trafficking across the Lebanese-Syrian border, as well as other border violations."
