Arab League Warns of Severity of Targeting Lebanese Army
إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربيةThe Arab League condemned on Monday the attack against the Lebanese army by supporters of Salafist cleric Sheikh Ahmed al-Asir in the southern city of Sidon on Sunday, calling on all Lebanese powers to exert efforts to avert strife.
Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi warned of the “dangerousness of targeting the army,” demanding that the assailants be arrested and brought to justice.
“Supporting the army will help it perform its national duties seeing as it is the symbol of Lebanon's unity, security, and stability,” he said.
He also called on all political and religious leaderships to tackle the deteriorating security situation in Sidon in order to protect the people.
Sixteen soldiers have been killed in the clashes, the army said Monday, in violence tied to rising sectarian tensions fanned by the Syria conflict.
The fighting began on Sunday on the outskirts of Sidon and intensified on Monday.
The security cabinet pledged the military would fight until it "finishes with" al-Asir.
A military judge issued a warrant for the controversial cleric's arrest, a judicial source said.
The violence is among the worst in Lebanon since the start of the Syrian conflict, which has inflamed sectarian tensions in the country, particularly between Shiite supporters of the Damascus regime and Sunni backers of the uprising.
We are not arabs never have been and never will be,we need to pull out of this mickey mouse league.
Partition please.
I have read the above comments.
Dear Mr. President;
First, I apologize for comments in my previous posts concerning having the "Army" take control of the borders. I see that they are occupied POLICING internal matters. I would assume in civilized countries they would have the local police, regional sheriff's and the ISF control cities and regions. Second, I see the AL wants everyone to say they wont screw with the "LAF".
Mr. President, until you see the AL commit "peace keeping" troops to Jordan to secure the Golan aginst any possible further conflict with Israel and assist the UN in maintaining peace to the South and REQUIRE Hizthrowup give up all security of ALL Lebanese BORDER control. I understand and admire the suppression of any aggresion angainst the LAF but make sure it is "Country" wide when it comes to such aggression. You have a group in your country that surpasses the military by far. You were & are a military officer, not a politician...let LEBANON see it!
gabby14 just remember this Yesterday Asir ,tomorrow Hassan & the rest of the scum in Tripoli to follow.God bless & free our beloved Lebanon .
