European Union ambassadors stressed on Wednesday the need for the new Lebanese government to respect its international commitments, especially United Nations Security Council resolutions 1701 and 1757.

It said in a statement after holding talks with Prime Minister Najib Miqati at the Grand Serail that its policy statement should follow up on the Special Tribunal for Lebanon’s functioning without creating obstacles in its way.

It also highlighted the importance of the Lebanese institutions’ democratic functioning.

The statement added that the European Union looks forward to continuing its cooperation with Lebanon, hoping that the reform program on Lebanon would be implemented and that it would succeed in overcoming political and economic obstacles.

For his part, Miqati stressed Lebanon’s commitment to maintaining the best ties with the United Nations and the international community and respecting resolution 1701.

He said: “Security and economy are a priority because stability will ensure a healthy economy.”

You will notice that when the demand is to respect UNRES 1701 and 1757, Mikati always responds positively to 1701 and is silent on 1757, which is the resolution under which the STL was created and operates.
This is Hezbollah speaking. It can cherry pick 1701 and interpret it to mean that Israel should not violate the Blue Line boundary demarcation between Lebanon and Israel, while ignoring the parts of 1701 that require Hezbollah to disarm and that arms smuggling be eliminated.
1757 is another matter. When the indictments come down, will Mikati's government execute the indictments against itself? This is a sick joke, sicker than Michel Aoun's mental condition. No dictator, once it seizes power ever voluntarily gives it up, much less, falls on its sword.
Mikati may try to BS his way around 1757 in a phony policy statement that is to be sold to the BS merchants who make up the Lebanese Parliament.
But 1757 is UN, it is the law, and BS will not work then to avert the legal process.
