The Higher Defense Council lauded on Monday the “patriotic spirit” of the Lebanese that steered Lebanon away from strife after the latest bombings that rocked the country.

The Council “discussed the movement of the explosive situation from one area to the other in an attempt to create instability and insecurity,” said a statement read by Secretary-General Maj. Gen. Mohammed Kheir after a meeting held under President Michel Suleiman at Baabda Palace.

It “lauded the patriotic spirit that characterized the reactions of the citizens in terms of rejecting strife either after the bombings in Tripoli or in Beirut's southern suburbs,” he said.

The conferees discussed “the measures taken by security forces to improve their mobilization,” Kheir added.

Two coordinated explosions rocked two mosques in Tripoli on Friday, raising already simmering sectarian tensions in the country.

A car bomb also targeted Beirut's southern suburbs controlled by Hizbullah on August 15.

The Council also discussed the latest Israeli aggression on Lebanon and ways to preserve the country's sovereignty.

Early Friday, Israeli warplanes struck a target in Naameh south of Beirut, a day after militants fired four rockets into northern Israel.

The raid targeted a Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC) base in a valley in Naameh that lies 16 kilometers south of Beirut. But it did not cause any casualties or material damage.

The Baabda palace meeting was attended by Caretaker Premier Najib Miqati, and Caretaker Ministers Adnan Mansour, Fayez Ghosn, Marwan Charbel, Ali Hassan Khalil, Mohammed Safadi, Nicolas Nahhas and Wael Abou Faour.

Army chief Gen. Jean Qahwaji was also among the military and security officials who attended the meeting.

Qahwaji told reporters ahead of the meeting that Lebanon enjoyed the highest level of stability compared to the unstable situation in the region.

The Council keeps its decisions confidential in accordance to the law.

what's your problem with him praising the patriotic spirit and national solidarity in this tragedy? if anything can save us it's sticking together and not giving in to these attempts to turn us against each other.
and he didnt call it "excellent" btw.

right on Canadian_paul. Our politicians are indeed pathetic. They are the main reason why the country is sinking deeper in the abyss.
God help Lebanon and the Lebanese

We are our own enemies...the USA is neither friend nor foe, it pursues its interests like any other nation. That we let our own differences be exploited by outside currents is no-one fault but our own. Our enemies know how to exploit our differences to suit their interest. We refuse to take responsibility by voting into office the same M corrupt politicians and then we sit and cry about our misfortunes while they get rich and take the country to hell and back, day in and day out. Time to change our ways so history doesn't repeat itself.

Tex ,
You are right in what you are saying , but we all should also attack our major issue in Lebanon as well as with your quest .
Our major problem is Refugees ! All refugees have a homeland to go to . We are currently cater over 2 million at the moment , if the international League of Nations as it was known then created israel and dumped refugees in Palestine then surely they can send All of our Refugees back to their ancestral homeland , the Palestinians to the West Bank & the Syrians to the Golan Heights ! That is our major issue , the UN has the power to achieve this goal as it did back in 1948 for the Jews !
Signed Wolf !

That's too much to ask for currently, unfortunately. Though agreed. Security must become the top most important issue in light of events next door.
