Arab League Urges U.N., World to Take 'Deterrent' Steps on Syria

Arab League foreign ministers on Sunday urged the United Nations and the international community to take "deterrent" action against the Syrian regime over alleged chemical attacks near Damascus.

But they fell short of calling for military strikes as proposed by the United States, amid divisions in Arab ranks with several countries opposed to foreign intervention in Syria.

"The United Nations and the international community are called upon to assume their responsibilities in line with the U.N. Charter and international law by taking the necessary deterrent measures" following the August 21 suspected chemical attacks, they said in a statement.

The ministers, meeting in Cairo, said the Syrian regime was "responsible" for the attacks which the United States says killed hundreds of people with the use of sarin gas.

U.S. President Barack Obama said he will seek congressional approval to launch a punitive strike on the regime in Damascus over last month's attacks in suburbs of the Syrian capital.

U.N. chemical weapons inspectors have carried out a probe in the suspected sites and collected samples which will be sent to European laboratories from Monday.

The U.N. has refused to announce its timeline for finishing the analysis.

"We have learned through samples that were provided to the United States and that have now been tested from first responders in East Damascus, (that) hair samples and blood samples have tested positive for signatures of sarin," U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday.

The Arab foreign ministers said those responsible for unleashing the poison gas in Syria must be tried before an international court "like other war criminals."

They also called for "all forms of support needed by the Syrian people" but without explicitly calling for military strikes as proposed by the United States and France.

Those who are responsible should be tried at the international court ?
Starting with Israel along with the major players of the Arab Nations that have collaborated with the Zionist Regeime should be lined up tried & given the death penalty for the atrocities they have committed in the past, Bahrain is one example by suppressing ,torturing , jailing & killing their own people, with KSA for inciting & funding terrorism not just in our region but all over the world is another. Take a hard look at yourselves first , just as well you all are against any military strikes, now the US stands Alone with Israel otherwise if Syria falls ANY Arab Nation would become on a hit list by the Israelis & US when ever they see fit ....Idiots !

tonto: being arab doesn't necessarily mean u have to disagree with the creation of the state of izrael. people from kuwait or yemen r too far to be bothered by this because they r more democratic than syria for instance. KSA is a country of peace, it's the birthplace of Islam, a religion of peace, just like Israel is for the hebrews and Christians. why would u want them 2 clash? to please ur pretty eyes?

I would ask the Syrian government to put its effort now on proving to the world that it has nothing to do with the Chemical attack. Simple! do not get engage in none-sense! Law is above anyone and you have your case, no evidence. No crime. Do not wave the robe for the cowboy!

The truth, the actual truth, is usually buried deep under nonsense and distractions. I don't believe it really(hello, infowars) but I wouldn't put it past Bandar regardless.

Arab league has become nothing more but a zionist serving entity charged with protecting the jews.. If they had just one ounce of pride they would not call of foreign powers to strike the people of Syria.
