Israeli Forces Join Kenya Battle to End Deadly Mall Siege

Kenyan troops launched an assault Sunday to end a terrifying siege by Somali militants holding hostages inside a shopping mall, with police warning the death toll of 68 could rise sharply.

Shortly after night fell with the siege well into its second day, teams backed by Israeli agents moved in to end the bloodbath at the upmarket Westgate complex.

"Godspeed to our guys in the Westgate building," Kenya's National Disaster Operation Center said in a message on its Twitter site. "Major engagement ongoing."

The disaster center reported "sporadic gunfire" as the forces tackled remaining attackers, while an Agence France Presse reporter outside the mall heard a loud explosion as helicopters flew overhead.

"The criminals are now all located in one place within the building... we have as good a chance to successfully neutralize the terrorists as we can hope for," President Uhuru Kenyatta said in a speech to the nation.

Kenyatta, who called for patience, said he had received "numerous offers of assistance from friendly countries" but that for now it remained a Kenyan operation.

However, a Kenyan security source confirmed that Israelis "are rescuing the hostages and the injured". The Israeli foreign ministry refused to confirm or deny its forces were involved.

Terrified witnesses recounted scenes of horror as the masked gunmen tossed grenades and sprayed automatic gunfire in the packed center in a brazen attack around midday on Saturday, sending panicked shoppers fleeing for their lives.

At least 68 people are now confirmed to have been killed in the ongoing siege, Kenya Red Cross said, after nine bodies were recovered.

The bodies were taken out the mall shortly after Kenyan troops launched the assault.

The Red Cross has estimated the number of injured at around 200, with around 40 others missing in the more than 30-hour-siege.

But police sources who had entered the building on Sunday evening said they feared that the death toll "could be much, much higher...judging from the bodies sighted inside," reporting attackers continued to fight back.

Somalia's al-Qaida-inspired Shebab rebels said the carnage at the partly Israeli-owned complex was in retaliation for Kenya's military intervention in Somalia, where African Union troops are battling the Islamists.

"They shall not get away with their despicable and beastly acts," Kenyatta said in an emotional speech. "We will punish the masterminds swiftly, and indeed very painfully."

More than 1,000 people have been rescued, but between 10 to 15 attackers -- reportedly both men and women -- are holding out in the multi-story complex "as well as many unarmed, badly shaken, innocent civilians", Kenyatta said.

Kenyatta said a nephew and his fiancee were among those killed during the sometimes ferocious gun battles.

The dead also included three Britons, two French women, two Canadians including a diplomat, a Chinese women, two Indians, a South Korean, a South African and a Dutch woman, according to their governments.

Also killed was Ghanaian poet and former U.N. envoy Kofi Awoonor, 78, while his son was injured.

The attack, the worst in Nairobi since an al-Qaida bombing at the U.S. embassy killed more than 200 people in 1998, was condemned by world powers.

U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon called the attack "totally reprehensible."

Vice President William Ruto has asked the International Criminal Court to delay his trial for crimes against humanity over deadly 2007-08 post-election violence because of the mall standoff, his lawyer said.

Mall worker Zipporah Wanjiru, who emerged from the ordeal alive but in a state of shock, said she hid under a table with five other colleagues.

"They were shooting indiscriminately, it was like a movie seeing people sprayed with bullets like that," she said, bursting into tears. "I have never witnessed this in my life. Only God can heal us and our country."

Cafe waiter Titus Alede, who risked his life and leaped from the first floor of the mall, said it was a "miracle from God" that he managed to escape the approaching gunmen.

"I remember them saying 'you killed our people in Somalia, it is our time to pay you back'," he said.

One teenage survivor told how he played dead to avoid being killed.

"I heard screams and gunshots all over the place. I got scared... (and) hid behind one of the cars," 18-year-old Umar Ahmed told AFP.

In the hours after the attack began, shocked people of all ages and races could be seen running from the mall, some clutching babies, while others crawled along walls to avoid stray bullets.

As well as Kenyan troops, foreign security agents -- from Israel as well as the United States and Britain -- were also seen in the mall, which is popular with wealthy Kenyans and expatriates.

An AFPTV reporter said she saw at least 20 people rescued from a toy shop, some of them children taken away on stretchers.

Israeli interests previously attacked

Shebab said the attack was retaliation for Kenya's nearly two-year-old military presence in war-torn Somalia in support of the internationally-backed government.

"If you want Kenya in peace, it will not happen as long as your boys are in our lands," spokesman Sheik Ali Mohamud Rage said in a statement.

The group also issued a string of statements via Twitter, one of them claiming that Muslims in the centre had been "escorted out by the Mujahideen before beginning the attack."

Israeli interests in Kenya have come under attack before.

In November 2002 there were two simultaneous attacks in the Mombasa area. A missile targeted an Israeli charter flight as it took off from the port city's airport, but missed.

At the same time a car packed with explosives smashed into the Israeli-owned Paradise hotel, killing 10 Kenyans and three Israelis.

here it is part of a state army whereas your hezbis friends are a party disobeying the position of the lebanese state!
too hard for your empty brains?
so no double standards as you cannot compare the two... but for an FPMer pup it is too difficult to comprehend....

Missing peace 22 September 2013, 18:02

poor FT... always ridiculizing himself to appear smart... let me explain again to your empty brain:
1/ you are comparing hezbi actions to israelis so i am just showing you that you are comparing two different things = a state and a political party!
too difficult? but you found yourself left with no arguments so you take the M14 pretext which is not comparable...
you have to meddle M14 with it when your point was not about M14 but hezbis and israelis... and once again M14 position is not comparable with hezbis.... a few weapons against a war party? LOL you are too idiot...M14 NEVER sent any troops there. so again your stupid comparaison is VOID like your brain!
poor man you are pityful.... always comparing incomparable things to try and look smarter... it is the typical populist stance used by extremist people!

Thumb _mowaten_ 22 September 2013, 19:07

dont bother FT, they always have a nice excuse for whatever israel does.
but hey, they're not israelis nor israeli lovers, mind you!

Thumb arzak-ya-libnan 22 September 2013, 17:39

No. Let me explain it to you simpleton. The govts of both countries came to an agreement.
End of story.
Do you wake up at night screaming USA gave me nightmares? How about after a meal. Do you go around complaining USA gave indigestion?

Thumb arzak-ya-libnan 22 September 2013, 19:08

Because its little pea brains like you who like to sit back and blame everything on the big bad wolf instead of looking at your own mistakes and blaming yourself. It could have been an agreement to help with a specific operation. It could be an agreement to train. I do not know the specifics besides it is one country's govt and another country's govt who BOTH agreed to this. If it was for protecting Israelis then that was the agreement. You pathetically like to add that USA gave them the right to do so. Ok mr political analyst. Lol

Thumb arzak-ya-libnan 22 September 2013, 19:47

So why are you not crtisizing Russia for vetoing in Syria? Because it fits your masters agenda? If you want to crtisize one then do the other. And stop. Your biased double standards.

Thumb kanaanljdid 22 September 2013, 18:11

FT, they are fighting terrorists who killed and kidnaped innocents civilians in a mall.

Don't compare to Hizbullah who glorifies people like Samir Quntar who killed a whole family and smashed the head of a little girl on a rock.

I would be glad if Lebanon sent special force from its sole legitimate army to fight Hizbullah-Khomeinists terrorists on its soil and al-Qaida terrorist in Kenya.

Southern: "H.A. is a legitimate Lebanese resistance and here to remain as long as, there are enemies around, INTERNAL or external". We are more concerned about the "internal" reference. My suggestion to the Saudi vs. Iran puppets in Lebanon is to remove yourselves from Lebanon and fight your religious battles in Syria, Iraq, Iran or Saudi Arabia where it matters. For Lebanon to survive economically, attract lucrative investments and tourism that feeds the stomachs and pockets of the working people and once again become the jewel of the Middle East, it must return to Christian rule, and the Muslim politicians may continue to represent their constituencies under the control and supervision of the Christian leadership whether the rest like it or not because, right now, all Lebanon is doing is fighting/killing each other while our enemies prosper.

Missing VINCENT 22 September 2013, 23:54

Otherwise, with the deeply routed hatred between the two Muslim secs imported into Lebanon where it does not belong, and the thousands of victims who have already given their lives in vein, Lebanon can not and will not survive and will become the smelly "armpit" thorn between prospering Israel, Iran and oil rich Gulf countries. Sad but true. Or Partition since we don't want to rely on Iranians or Saudis bankrolling their dirt deeds that artificially feeds the pockets of the few and divide the country. We have what it takes and rather empower the people and country do through commerce.

israel is a country--hizb iran is an iranian militia. Countries will elicit each other's help on matters. Hizb iran otoh, is a militia paid for and controlled by iran. iran sent hizb iran into syria bypassing the government altogether.

do you see the difference?

Thumb _mowaten_ 22 September 2013, 19:18

Iran doesnt need Hezbollah if they want to send men in Syria they can send hundreds of thousands of theirs. Plus they have a mutual defense agreement with Syria, so nobody could even say a word.

Hezbollah went in Quseyr because they were firing rockets on Hermel, kidnapping pilgrims, attacking border villages and massing up thousands of fighters on the border and making threats they would attack. They were a nuisance which was cleaned up, dont go crying for dirty terrorists.

Missing samiam 22 September 2013, 21:06

"Iran doesnt need Hezbollah if they want to send men in Syria they can send hundreds of thousands of theirs."

yet they chose to send hizb iran---maybe as not be DIRECTLY involved as others have suggested, except for those pesky 'pilgrims'. You know the term 'proxy' thrown around this area--you may want to understand its meaning.

Thumb _mowaten_ 22 September 2013, 22:38

are you that thick? i just told you why they went there, but you're too prejudiced to be able to hear logic and even less understand it.
iran couldnt care less about quseyr, and assad wasnt even going to go there, it wasnt very high on his priorities list.
HA went there for the simple reason that the terrorists there were attacking lebanon and lebanese in border villages, and they were massing ten thousands fighters there, probably preparing a big attack. HA killed the danger in the egg.

Missing VINCENT 22 September 2013, 23:17

No. No double standard here. Let's work towards making the "Lebanese" Army the strongest in the region, so Lebanon may effectively protect its homeland and officially protect its interests abroad like these pesky Israelis. But no, you chose to be divided and on all fours to service the interest of those who divided you in the first place. What are you guys complaining about. Look yourselves in the mirror. Shameful.
