Interior Minister Marwan Charbel said that the cabinet’s meeting on Thursday will not discuss the interior ministry’s new appointments not regarding the director-general of General Security nor the judiciary police chief.
“These appointments are interlinked with other appointments,” Charbel told As Safir newspaper on Wednesday.
Informed sources told the daily that the appointment of the General Security director-general is not facing obstacles.
“It’s all related to technical issues; however there are no disputes over the name or his sect. The post will remain with the Shiites,” the sources stressed.
Meanwhile, informed sources told al-Liwaa newspaper that the chances of appointing Brigadier-General Abbas Ibrahim as General Security director-general have improved.
The sources said that the stances announced by Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun confirm that he will not engage in a battle with anyone to restore the position with Maronites.
Aoun “realizes that this appointment will happen whether he accepted or refused it,” they told al-Liwaa.
The sources added that Aoun “doesn’t want to make the issue useful for March 14 Christians to exploit.”
