Speaker Nabih Berri condemned the “vile” attack against a van carrying residents of the neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen in the northern city of Tripoli, reported al-Joumhouria newspaper on Monday.
He said: “The attack was aimed at creating strife in Lebanon, nothing more nothing less.”
Al-Joumhouria added that he received a telephone call from caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati in light of Saturday's attack.
The speaker reaffirmed to Miqati that the assault was aimed at sparking strife, “which will not happen.”
“The statements of condemnation only confirm that the Lebanese people are unanimously against returning to the civil war,” remarked Berri.
At least six residents from Jabal Mohsen were wounded on Saturday when a van carrying eight passengers came under attack by masked gunmen in the neighborhood of al-Tabbaneh near Dar al-Salam school.
The assailants took the passengers at gunpoint to local streets in the area and shot six of them in their feet.
