Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat noted on Monday that the developments in Syria demonstrated that it is impossible to carry on with the security approach over the country’s anti-regime protests.
He said in his weekly editorial in the PSP-affiliated al-Anbaa magazine: “A new approach should be adopted through resorting to dialogue.”
“Reform should be implemented practically and not theoretically,” he added.
“Only dialogue can solve the matters at hand, protect Syria’s unity, and fulfill the Syrian people’s aspirations for a better future,” stressed the Druze leader.
Jumblat noted: “It is necessary, now more than ever, to implement the reforms promised by Syrian President Bashar Assad, starting with lifting the emergency law, releasing all political prisoners, and holding officials responsible for the unlawful acts that have taken place whether by security officials or armed gangs.”
Protests against Assad broke out in March.
They were met with a bloody crackdown resulting in the deaths of over 1400 individuals and the arrest of over 12,000 others, according to rights groups.
