Berri Meets Khamenei, Rouhani in Tehran Visit, Lauds Iran's Nuclear Deal

Speaker Nabih Berri held talks on Monday with Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, President Hassan Rouhani and head of Shura Council Ali Larijani on Tehran's landmark nuclear deal with world powers.

Talks focused on the regional repercussions of the deal.

Berri described after meeting Larijani the agreement as “the deal of the generation.”

For his part, Larijani deemed his talks with Berri as “constructive”, saying they addressed bilateral relations and sensitive regional affairs.

Later on Monday, Berri and the accompanying delegation met with President Rouhani and talks focused on the current regional and international situations and the nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, Lebanon's National News Agency said.

Rouhani hoped the visit will "contribute to enhancing ties between the two countries," underlining Iran's keenness on Lebanon, NNA said.

Berri also held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on the regional and international developments and the landmark nuclear deal.

Zarif offered condolences to the Lebanese people over the victims of "the criminal attack on the Iranian embassy in Beirut," warning that "this indicates that we all can be victims of extremism and terrorism and we have to cooperate with each other."

The Lebanese delegation accompanying Berri described the visit and the meetings as successful at all levels, noting that the Iranians agreed to the speaker's viewpoints, “especially with regards to confronting the conspiracy of sedition and seeking Iranian-Arab rapprochement.”

On Sunday, Berri hoped the nuclear agreement will pave the way for a “settlement” in war-torn Syria.

The speaker visited Tehran at an official invitation from his Iranian counterpart Larijani. He is accompanied by MPs Abdul Latif al-Zein, Hagop Pakradounian, Ghazi Zoaiter, Ali Fayyad and Qassem Hashem.

Tehran has agreed that it will not enrich uranium over five percent for the six-month period and will neutralize its entire stockpile of uranium enriched to 20 percent, which is close to weapons-grade and therefore an area of top concern.

In return, the EU and United States will suspend sanctions on Iran's petrochemical exports and gold and precious metals sector.

U.S. trade restrictions on the country's auto industry will also be suspended.
