Aoun: Doesn’t Matter Who Heads General Security as Long as his Performance is Good

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun hoped on Tuesday that the government would immediately start addressing the people’s concerns.

He added after the Change and Reform bloc’s weekly meeting: “Parliament’s extraordinary sessions are aimed at keeping up with the cabinet’s functioning.”

On the appointment of Abbas Ibrahim as the head of General Security, the MP said: “I voiced my position when this issue was first brought up … It’s not important who assumes this position as long as his performance is good.”

“The General Security Department will never turn into what they had transformed it into in the past,” he remarked in reference to the March 14 camp.

On the various assaults against the security forces, he said: “This requires swift action.”

Regarding the attack against a Maronite League delegation at the town of Lassa, Aoun noted: “The Interior Ministry is partially responsible for the assaults happening in the first place.”

“We hope the situation would be contained to avoid it spreading to other areas,” said the FPM leader.

“The ISF cannot prevent various assaults, but these incidents are taking place at an excessive rate and they are not being properly handled,” he added.

“An investigation should be launched in this matter,” the MP demanded.

Regarding the national dialogue, Aoun hoped that the issue of the false witnesses in the investigation into the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri would be addressed at the dialogue table.

“A new authority capable of taking a decision in this matter has been formed,” he stressed.

On U.S. aid to Lebanon’s security forced, the MP deemed them as “unproductive” seeing as they are limited to training programs.

“We haven’t seen any weapons or ammunition from the United States,” he concluded.
