Killer Bacteria Outbreak Claims Scores of Horses at Beirut Racecourse

Around 40 horses were put down at the Beirut racecourse lately after contracting deadly bacteria that harms humans as well, al-Liwaa daily reported Wednesday.

The association in charge of the hippodrome and the agriculture ministry are staying mum on the issue although there is still a long list of horses that should be put down, the newspaper quoted sources as saying.

The sources urged the health, agriculture and interior ministries in addition to the Beirut municipality to immediately cordon off the racecourse and contain the illness before it threatens the life of citizens.

A municipal official said that the council is studying the contract of the association, which has ended five years ago, and seeking to solve financial problems with it before bringing the hippodrome back to the control of Beirut municipality.

The municipality along with the government of the Ile of France region is preparing a study to transform the 2,100,000 square meter plot into a center that includes a racecourse.
