'Juno' Star Ellen Page Says She's Gay

Ellen Page, the fresh-faced star of the 2007 sleeper hit "Juno," declared at a press conference late Friday that she is gay.

"I'm here today because I am gay," Page, 26, said at an event for homosexual teens in Las Vegas hosted by the Human Rights Campaign, a pro-gay rights group.

"I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission. I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered and my relationships suffered," she said.

Page said that she felt "a personal obligation and a social responsibility" to come out as gay.

The Canadian-born Page was nominated for an Oscar for her role as a pregnant teenager in "Juno."

She also appeared in the 2009 roller derby comedy "Whip It," the 2010 science fiction hit "Inception" opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, and the 2012 Woody Allen comedy "To Rome with Love."

Page is also set to appear in the 2014 mid-year blockbuster "X-Men: Days of Future Past."

"We deserve to experience love fully, equally, without shame and without compromise," she told the crowd.

Page also decried the "pervasive stereotypes about masculinity and femininity that define how we are all supposed to act, dress and speak. They serve no one."

In her speech, Page praised other prominent people who have declared they are gay, including American football college star Michael Sam, who could become the first open gay player in the U.S. National Football League.
