Unknown Assailants Toss Hand Grenade at Army Post in Tripoli, One Detained

Two unknown assailants on a motorcycle threw a hand grenade at an army post in the northern city of Tripoli on Wednesday evening, the army command said in a communique.

According to the statement, issued on Thursday, soldiers opened fire at the motorcycle, wounding one of the offenders.

It noted that the other assailant managed to flee the scene.

The injured person was transferred to the nearest hospital for treatment.

Judicial police opened an investigation into the incident under the supervision of the competent judiciary, the communique added.

Meanwhile, Voice of Lebanon radio (93.3) reported that army is continuing its raids in the northern city in search of wanted suspects, setting up mobile and stationary checkpoints to that end.

Tripoli has been frequently victim to clashes between the rival Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen neighborhoods.

The neighborhoods have frequently witnessed rounds of clashes, but they have risen in intensity in recent years in light of the eruption of the uprising in Syria in March 2011.

The residents of Bab al-Tabbaneh back the uprising, while Jabal Mohsen, the Arab Democratic Party's stronghold, supports the Syrian regime.
